Rookie Blog Question
-
Hi! I am in the process of starting my new blog. Within the blog I have different categories in the menu for ‘Parenting,’ ‘Marriage,’ etc. I added my first post and it’s showing up on the main page, as I’d hoped. But i am trying to figure out a way to also direct each individual post to the correct category it will fall under. For example, this first post falls under parenting, so I’d like it to show on the main screen for now, but also be archived under the Parenting menu selection so people can select which topics they’d like to read about. Is there a way to do this? Is it so glaringly obvious that I’m going to feel ridiculous?

Hi @meganrosecoloredglasses. Congrats on your first post!
The easiest way to do this is to assign categories to your posts (this option is in the right-hand sidebar when you are editing the post), and have your custom menu display each relevant category.
So you would set the category to “Parenting” and then add that category as a menu item so that clicking on “Parenting” in your menu will show all the posts in the Parenting category.
And don’t feel ridiculous – there are lots of features and options and it can take some time to get a feel for how they all come together! Give it a try and please don’t hesitate to ask more questions if you have them. We love to help out. :) Happy blogging!

Hello!
You don’t need to feel ridiculous! I’ve been there plenty of times myself. It’s great that you already have a plan on how you want your site laid out, that’s the first step. There are so many options when starting a site, and what you are looking at is a multistep process. Good news! Breaking your site up into different categories can be done.
I didn’t see a website linked in your profile, do you mind sharing it? If the site is from WordPress.org then hope over to their forums and they should help you out. If it is a WordPress.com site then the following should work.
First, you’ll want to make a category page. This is the page that your readers will see all the posts in one category – two of them can be Parenting and Marriage. Here’s a link on how to get that setup – https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
Next, it sounds like you want a menu where the readers can see the list of different category pages. Here is how to get that set up – https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages
Then, you’ll want your posts to show up on the blog and those pages. This one shows how to make that happen – https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
Let me know if that works for what you needed.
Happy blogging! :)

Hi there, I see our volunteers have given you some good information. If you need further help with this, please make sure to give us the address of the site you need help with so we can make sure that we are giving you accurate information for your specific site.
Just to clarify, this support forum assists users of WordPressdotcom hosted sites and the guidance provided here may not be relevant to DIY WordPress.org sites hosted with an external hosting provider (e.g. Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.).
