RSS does not initiate subscription

I use the Andreas09 theme, and my RSS link refuses to work properly. It DID work last week. I have the RSS2 widget in place, with the http://pineneedle.wordpress.com/feed assigned to the link. When I click the icon (or the default meta link for RSS), all I get is the xml code on the feed page. Feedvalidator says that the link is valid. On this blog site: http://hjegberts.wordpress.com/wie/ , the guy uses the exact same template as me, and his RSS link works perfectly.

I really need this product to actually function professionally. Support hasn’t been successful except to make the correction to the error in line 15 in the RSS code, which I uncovered, so do any of you guys have any ideas?

OK, I’m lost. What specifically doesn’t work here? The RSS feed works fine for me. The xml code is what you’re suppose to get.

The language on the blog had not been set, so the RSS had an error. It always will until it has been told the blog owner’s language.

As to work properly – unless your computer has an association made between either ‘feed:’ or the type of page and it then launches the appropriate application when the feed is clicked – if you click it you get one ugly page of text.

If you have IE7 / Firefox2 and maybe Opera does this and you click a feed, the browser prompts you that the page is meant for a feedreader and it makes the ugly text a litle less ugly.

But either way the feed works – it’s not broken.

I am quite surprised that xml is what one is supposed to get when they click an RSS link. Why on earth would any developer want to offer a potential subscriber a page of code, when the potential subscriber simply wants to click to add a subscription?

And please remember: the feed link here http://hjegberts.wordpress.com/wie/ works perfectly (same template, same technology). When it is clicked (same Mozilla browser for both sites), my news reader (thunderbird) immediately adds the subscription to the news & blogs section, builds the folder and downloads all new articles. That is exactly how an RSS link is supposed to function. Offering up a page of code is an error, not a success.

I am quite surprised that xml is what one is supposed to get when they click an RSS link.

That’s what RSS is. The code is suppose to look like what HTML looks like. It’s up to the browser or reader to ‘translate’ it.

Then please tell me why the RSS link at the wordpress site here hjegberts.wordpress.com/wie/ works perfectly. Please, please tell me what is different, so I can do that. And when I clicked on the RSS feed for this forum, I did not get a page of code either. It added the feed to Thunderbird immediately, and downloaded the new messages.

He is using the ‘feed:’ protocol.

  • Unknown's avatar

pineneedle: if you’re so worked up about it, use FeedBurner (http://feedburner.com)

  • Unknown's avatar

I see that link as XML as well.

  • Unknown's avatar

Podz, I tried that and it does not work at my blog. (the feed:http://pine… protocol.) A brief tour of other WordPress sites dug up several where RSS works properly.
    wuya.wordpress.com, rockyourcareer.wordpress.com, ldiiwatch.wordpress.com, montypup.wordpress.com, and several others.

What is right about those sites that is wrong with mine and the others where RSS does not function? This needs to work, and I’m surprised to find that RSS functionality is the exception, rather than the rule.

What is the problem, and what is the solution?

  • Unknown's avatar

    http://wuya.wordpress.com/
    feed:http://wuya.wordpress.com/feed/

    http://rockyourcareer.wordpress.com/
    feed:http://rockyourcareer.wordpress.com/feed/

    http://ldiiwatch.wordpress.com/
    feed:http://ldiiwatch.wordpress.com/feed/

    http://pineneedle.wordpress.com/
    http://pineneedle.wordpress.com/feed/

Your theme author did not code ‘feed:’
Therefore the program fails to launch.
This is a combo of 2 things:
1 – the file association on your machine
2 – the author’s decision to code that way

I will request the meta be fixed, in the meantime, add the link manually.

Thank you. I did go to his (Andreas)site and post a note asking him about it. I am still curious about how this guy hjegberts.wordpress.com/wie has an RSS link that works. I would ask him, but we have a language barrier. He’s not privately hosted, so I assume he does not have access to the html. It looks like his setup is the same as mine.

Thanks for helping out, Podz. I look forward to the fix.

Podz, when I add the feed:http… to my RSS2 widget and save it, the link vanishes from my main page. When I go back to re-examine the widget, the manual link I wrote is gone and is replaced with this: “Error: could not find an RSS or ATOM feed at that URL”.

I sure need RSS to work. What should we do? Most (60%?)of the RSS links are broken on the WordPress.com sites I checked for you yesterday, although the RSS link on this forum works fine.

Thanks, but no workee. The RSS widget will not display using that line. These, from other sites where RSS does work, are written like this:
    wuya.wordpress.com/
    feed:http://wuya.wordpress.com/feed/

    rockyourcareer.wordpress.com/
    feed:http://rockyourcareer.wordpress.com/feed/

    ldiiwatch.wordpress.com/
    feed:http://ldiiwatch.wordpress.com/feed/

By the way, what do you mean by RSS2 widget? Do you mean RSS #2 widget as in your second RSS widget?

I added your RSS feed for your blog to a test blog of mine and it went in fine.

    I used the url of:

    http(colon)//pineneedle.wordpress.com/feed/

  • Unknown's avatar

So I see. Rss#2 widget, yes. Plus drMark, I suspect that you had to do a cut and paste job. RSS is a one click operation when its working. At http://pineneedle.blugginout.com/, using WP 2 and the identical Andreas09 template, RSS works as designed.

The only thing keeping me with WP.com is your darned feed stats, which I’ve become addicted to. So I really need RSS to be a one click operation. Will you make it so?
    Danke schön!

    @pineneedle
drmike is the forum Moderator a volunteer who is not on staff. He will not be back on the board until tomorrow when he will pick up this thread.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok. Will you please make the RSS link on my blog work correctly? It should function as the RSS feed for this thread functions, but sometime this week it stopped working. I think it simply lacks the feed:http… function (as the working sample sites I included above do), and I really need that repaired before I move forward.

pineneedle – I have asked that the change you want be made.
Please be a little patient :)
