RSS Feed Not Redirecting After Custom Domain Upgrade
-
Hello! I recently purchased a custom domain upgrade through WordPress.com for my blog. Here are the previous and current URLs:
https://everafterrsl.wordpress.com
http://everafterrsl.comIt came to my attention today that anyone who subscribed to the RSS feed of my original WordPress.com URL is no longer receiving updates now that my URL has been updated. I’m doing my best to get the word out that people need to update their feeds, but without knowing who these people are who use Feedly or similar instead of the WordPress.com Reader, there’s not much I can do. I was under the impression that the original feed would continue functioning; is that not the case?
Again it’s not an issue with those who follow and read my blog through WordPress.com — that seems to still be working just fine. But those who use an outside aggregate like Feedly will have no idea my site has been updated unless they visit it directly. Is there any fix for this? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! :)

Unfortunately changing the URL of the site via domain mapping does not result in redirecting subscribers who have subscribed to the original URL.

Thanks Timethief; this really should be added to the information one sees prior to purchasing a custom domain upgrade, as someone with a lot of people subscribed to their RSS feed will lose significant traffic and views if they don’t know to inform people to update their feeds in advance. =/
Additionally, a friend just checked her WordPress.com Reader feed and told me that the post I published today – the first after my domain name change went into effect – is *not* showing up in her Reader. She originally followed my site when it was still EverAfterrSL.Wordpress.com. Is there a fix for this, by chance? Had I know that these issues would occur, I may not have gone forward with the upgrade. Help is greatly appreciated!

This is not the expected behavior. I checked the feed at https://everafterrsl.wordpress.com/feed and it is validating correctly and includes your most recent posts.
https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Feverafterrsl.wordpress.com%2Ffeed
I was also able to see your new posts in the WordPress.com reader when I subscribed with the original URL.
My tests with Feedly didn’t show the newer posts with either the old or new URL. This makes me think the problem might be on their end.
Do you have followers using any other feed reader?

Hi Lizthefair, the following feed is my for my old domain, the one I’m no longer using: https://everafterrsl.wordpress.com/feed
I just checked Feedly, and it looks like that feed finally populated with the post I published on the morning of May 26th. So it was about 24 hours late to update.
I realized I might be able to work around this issue by changing my primary domain name back to https://everafterrsl.wordpress.com for a few minutes around 3:30 am this morning. I then published a post asking people to update their follows and feed subscriptions, and then I immediately changed the primary domain back to the new one, http://everafterrsl.com. When I did that, I checked Feedly and that post popped up straight away in the OLD feed subscription, but NOT the new one, so it worked out exactly as I’d hoped it would. So if anyone happens to read this topic with the same issue, that may work for you as a temporary workaround and a means to get the word out to original followers/subscribers!
May I just confirm with you Liz if a person who started following the old domain https://everafterrsl.wordpress.com in WordPress Reader prior to May 25th has actually received the posts that were published on May 25th, 26th, and 27th in their Reader? I’ll try to contact some of the people whom I know were following me then, but I’d appreciate any assistance you can provide. :)

I checked on the feed of one of your earliest WordPress.com reader subscribers, and your most recent post shows up in their feed.

Wonderful, thank you for your assistance, Liz!
So it looks like it was a just a delay owing to the domain redirect or similar. Good to know all is working as it should. :)
