RSS problem
-
Subscribers of my RSS feed receive each blogpost several times. If the double entry is deleted, it pops up again a few hours later. Additionally, two subscribers (both are Mac users) complained, the RSS feed was permanently active, automatically downloading all related files and so wasting a lot of their harddisk space and CPU power. One subscriber unsubscribed already :-(
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Oh my! We need to know which subscribers this is happening to so Staff can make it stop. I’ll tag this thread for Staff help. Will you please provide a couple of usernames for those WordPress.com bloggers who did not receive the emails as well as a couple of email addresses for those who do not have WordPress.com accounts? The software will automatically redact ie. HIDE the email addresses so only Staff can see them. After you do that subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Hi there!
If the double entry is deleted, it pops up again a few hours later.
I read a comment on your blog that the duplicate entry problem has been resolved. Is that accurate?
Additionally, two subscribers (both are Mac users) complained, the RSS feed was permanently active, automatically downloading all related files and so wasting a lot of their harddisk space and CPU power.
Switching your feed to “Summary” should take care of this. Would you kindly ask your subscribers if they see any improvement? Thanks!
-
Hi druesome, thanks for your quick response :-) I switched my feed to “Summary” yesterday. Since then, there were no further complaints. But probably it’s too early ot say anything reliable. I will post again here when I have reliable feedback from my subscribers. Thanks!

@druesome: I’m sorry to inform you that the problem isn’t solved. A second subscriber unsubscribed this morning, because even after I switched feed options to “summary” on May 21rst , he was “spammed” with double postings and attached files from my rss feed. Both subscribers who unsubscribed now reported that my RSS feed was *permanently* active, *permanently* downloading data. Apart from this, my own subscription of the feed (via RSSOwl, Windows 7) continues to produce duplicate blog entries.
-
Sorry to hear that. I’ve gone ahead and subscribed to your feed and can see it loading only the summary in my Reader.
Would you kindly provide me the posts that are producing duplicate entries in your feed? Also, please try unsubscribing and resubscribing to your feed and see if that helps. Let me know what happens.
Cheers,
Andrew D.

Hi Andrew, here is a screenshot to proof the duplicates: As you see, several posts are listed twice.
Now I will unsubscribe the feed

in RSSOwl and then re-subscribe . -
Hi Andrew, I had a look at my feed this morning, and it looked like this:

Hey Stefan,
Unsubscribing and resubscribing may have caused the duplicate issue. When you do publish a new post, can you kindly check if that one gets a duplicate as well? Thanks!
-
Hi Andrew, after unsubscribing and resubscribing, I get duplicate posts again – and one of my (remaining) subscribers right now told me the same :-(
-
Hi Stefan!
Sorry about the continuing trouble you’re having with this. My guess would be that a software issue might be causing the duplicates. Could you kindly post your problem at the RSS Owl forums and see what the developers have to say about it?
Best wishes!

Hi Andrew,
as I mentioned before, I had reports from 3 (former) RSS subscribers of my blog that also received duplicate posts. As I experienced the duplicates under RSSOwl, I thought, ok, this might be an RSSOwl problem, so I didn’t care. But then, the three subscribers complained, and I started this thread. Would it be helpful for you to ask my subscribers for their technical specifications in subscribing the feed?
All the best
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
Yes, it certainly would! I’m going to file a report on this once I receive more information from your subscribers to help substantiate the problem. Looking forward to your reply! :)

Hi Andrew,
here is the info from 2 subscribers who both had duplicate posts in their RSS feed:
Subscriber 1: Mail 5.3, OSX 10.7.5
Subscriber 2: Mail 4.6, OS 10.6.8Both said, the feed had been “permanently active”, downloading “tons of data” (i. e. all files that were *linked* in my blogposts – as far as I know, this is *not* the default option for wordpress.com RSS feeds, isn’t it?).
All the best
Stefan

…and here is my 3rd subscriber experiencing the same problems:
Subscriber 3: RSSOwl, Windows 7 Home Premium
Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Stefan!
I’m just as perplexed as you are. :)
I have RSSOwl installed on my computer and I still can’t seem to replicate the duplicate feed issue. Do you have the newest version of the software? It looks like RSSOwl has a cleanup tool for duplicate feeds. Can you kindly try that out? Please follow these steps:
- Click on Tools -> Cleanup
- In the popup, make sure that the box beside your feed is checked
- Click Next
- Tick the box beside “Delete recently created duplicate feeds”
- Click Finish
- A popup box will ask you to restart RSSOwl to run the cleanup. Click Restart
Please share these steps to your third subscriber and let me know if it helps.
Regarding your first and second subscribers, I’m not sure why they’re still receiving full versions of your feed. I had just received an email digest from your blog and this is how it looks in Mail for me:
Can you ask them to forward the email to us so I can take a closer look?
Thanks for your patience!
-
Hi Andrew,
thanks for your patience too ;-)
I had the latest version of RSSOwl (2.2.1 Build ID: 2013-12-30), but I re-installed it anyway – no improvement :-(
Then I executed the cleanup tool: the duplicate entries were not deleted :-(
Now I ‘m trying to get some feedback from a Mac Mail subscriber.
All the best
Stefan
