RSS question

I am not certain that my RSS feed is working. When I click on the link on my blog, it just comes up as XML code (?) and not a page where you can subscribe. I’ve also seen this on some other people’s blogs.
Also, what is with the RSS widget? I took it down because it just sent me back to my blog and started listing all the posts under the link on my page. I have a link in a text widget now.
If anyone could shed light on this for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Here’s the FAQ entry on the RSS feed (it’s for showing other people’s feeds on your site, not your feed):
http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/24/using-the-rss-widget/Your feed is working fine, just your browser isn’t set up to read it. There are feed readers available, just Google it. I use Firefox as my browser, which is already set up to deal with feeds.

it just comes up as XML code
That’s what you’re suppose to get. “Subscribing to your blog” is actually an incorrect way of saying it. By subscribing, they would be giving you the necessary information and this isn’t what is occuring. Your readers are taking your RSS URL and putting it themselves into their readers. Kind of a reverse subscription I would think.
The RSS widget is a place where you can put the RSS URL of another blog or service and have it display on your blog. You don’t put your own feed URL in there.

Oh, it’s what I’m supposed to get? I have read all the FAQ, but for some reason it wasn’t making a whole lot of sense to me. I subscribe to feeds with Yahoo, usually…
Thanks for clearing that up about the RSS widget. I was wondering what the point of it was. I really didn’t find the FAQ very helpful when I set it up…
I’m just glad it’s working! Thanks guys :)

Yahoo is a reader. It takes the code and puts it into a more friendly format. XML is what you’re seeing when you click on the link.
Much like when you view the HTML in your browser. On IE, it’s View -> Source to see the HTML.

Yess…. I figured that was what it was. I take it I can’t read my own feed through Yahoo? That’s what’s still confusing me. Shouldn’t I be able to do that? How do I do that when all I see is the XML code?
Oh, I’m all quite new to this, but we’ve got to start somewhere, right? I really appreciate your help..

Yes, you should be able to: Use the following as an URL:
http://vanessagx.wordpress.com/feed/
It may take a post or two though to show up over there.
Are you getting some sort of error that’s preventing you from seeing it?

Hah! I just worked out how to add the address from the Yahoo end. I KNEW there was something really basic I was missing. I did get an error message when I tried to put the address in, but it said to try again later. So, I shall. And all will be well with the world.
Thanks, drmike. You’re a darling. :)
