RSS URLs

    I was wondering if there is a way of determining the RSS or feed URL for a given site that is hosted on WordPress.

    Specifically, ‘The Australian’ newspaper (https://www.theaustralian.com.au) uses WP for a lot (perhaps all) of its content, but the RSS 2.0 feed URLs they have supplied to RSS aggregators in the past are no longer current (they used to be of the format format ‘http://feeds.news.com.au/public/rss/2.0/aus_’, but these only retrieve articles up to 2016!

    While I’m familiar one can typically find the RSS/feed/atom URLs by inspecting the page source, but for this newspaper they’re impossible to find (apart from the main ‘http://www.theaustralian.com.au/feed’). Guessing the RSS feeds for individual sections like ‘Inquirer’ or ‘Sport’ doesn’t work.

    The publisher, News Ltd (Newscorp) clearly doesn’t intentionally make the RSS feed URLs unavailable; I think it’s just a matter of this particular publication being behind the times, since other Australian Newscorp-owned sites do advertise them.

    Here is a typical script that appears in the page source, which reflects its WP platform.

    //www.theaustralian.com.au/wp-content/themes/vip/newscorpau-theaustralian-broadsheet/dist/js/base.min.js?m=1584010962h

    If anyone can help, I’d love to know!

    Andrew

  • Hi Andrew,

    I’m not sure I understood your question. The site theaustralian.com.au is not hosted on WordPress.com so to learn more about that, you may want to post to the community forums here:

    Hi fresatomica,

    Thank you for responding. I have to confess I only signed up to WordPress yesterday and I actually thought I had posted it there!

    But I also see that I signed up to WordPress.com, not .org—so I’m not sure that you didn’t understand my email because people who administer and read the .org site wouldn’t have had a clue what I was talking about.

    If the question is how to correctly determine the RSS feed address for a given website hosted by WordPress can you please direct me to a specific Support page to re-post my query?

    In case it helps, these HTML tags and scripts appear in the site’s page source (I don’t really understand what they mean):

    <link rel=”EditURI” type=”application/rsd+xml” title=”RSD” href=”https://theaustraliannewscorpau.wordpress.com/xmlrpc.php?rsd” />

    Thanks again,
    Andrew

  • Hi there,

    Since that site is not hosted by us (WordPress.com) we cannot help. I suggest reaching out to the owners of that site instead. I’m sure there’s a contact form or email address to reach out to them.

    Also, as staff-mckluskey said, since they’re using the open-source WordPress software, you can ask you question in their official support forum:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/

    If you want to learn more about the differences between our platform (WordPress.com) and the WordPress software that this site is using, you can read this article:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
