RSS Widget malfunction
-
My widget for “Recently Watched” movies from Flixster seems to open a document tree when clicked on. 1) Does this create some kind of vulnerability for my blog? 2) How do I get the RSS link to go to Flixster and not open up this document tree? thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you click on the words, “recently watched…” it goes to your RSS feed from your account at flixter. If you click on one of the entries in the RSS widget, it goes to the individual movie page.

That is how it was working until up to like two weeks ago. Now when I click on “recently watched” i get the following:
This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
pear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

This is the upper left corner of what I see: http://opposablethumbz.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/rsswolf.gif .
Try clearing your browser cache and cookies and then take another look. I’m seeing the standard RSS feed ( http://www.flixster.com/api/v1/users/jeep856/ratings.rss ) so I suspect it is either an issue with a transparent proxy server between you and flixster, or an issue with the cache on your computer.

I cleared everything and get the same result. When I use IE8, I get what you see in your first link, but when I use my primary browser Firefox3 I get that document tree represented in your second link.
Just trying to clean it up so that when visitors click on the title of the RSS Feed they don’t get all that jibjab feed talk. thanks though for your help

Hmmm, OK Safari (and obviously IE8 are ignoring the fact that your flixster feed is actually broken: http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flixster.com%2Fapi%2Fv1%2Fusers%2Fjeep856%2Fratings.rss
You need to contact flixster, they are outputting a broken feed.
-
If the feed is broken, then why does it still update my reviews? When I add to flixster, it shows up on my WP blog just fine as an update. I would think if the RSS Feed was broken, then none of my updates would be reflected in the feed…correct?
-
WordPress is ignoring the broken feed. They don’t need the “style information” just the items to display. A browser on the other hand needs the style information typically to display the feed (although apparently IE8 and Safari at least work around that issue).
The feed coming out of flixster is BROKEN.

Read the validation report I linked to. It’s Broken, or at the very least, badly bent and damaged.

OK, thanks. I will try to contact them, but you know how some of these social sites can be when it comes to individual support. WOW, who would have thought that IE8 can do something better than Firefox3…LOL. thanks again for the help.

Here is what a valid feed validation looks like: http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fthe-sacred-path.com%2Ffeed

Yeah, I was kind of surprised that IE8 would actually sort through the broken feed and display something too. Firefox I’ve found is more rigid when it comes to some stuff.
