RSS:error
-
I have a simple blog using WordPress standard themes “The Twenty Twelve Theme”. I dont use a external server with WordPress installed. Only the Online-version of WordPress.COM.
The RSS-feed on my blog has work perfectly for long time but now I got this error:
“RSS-error: This XML document is invalid, likely due to invalid characters. XML error: Invalid character at line 199, column 31”
I have not change anything.
My problem is that I not can change this XML-problem. How can I delete this blank-row if that is the problem, when I use the online version of WordPress?
Regards PO
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is this the wrong place for answers? Where can I get help with this? Can I contact someone?

Sorry you had to wait for an answer. Where do you see this error message appearing?
These are the results after running your feed (http://ostvast.wordpress.com/feed/) through feedvalidator.org http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fostvast.wordpress.com The feed is valid

OK-so now I see that someone has tagged this for Staff assistance. They have quite a backlog of posts waiting for their attention, so let’s try to give them as much info as possible.

I know there is two difference bloggs using this feed. One of them works ok, but this one does not.
The only difference between this blogs is the theme.

OK-hang in there. When a forum thread is tagged for Staff assistance, unless you have new information to give them, don’t bump this thread because it pushes it down in the queue.

Hi @bibvik
The error appear in the admin-panel in the RSS-widget when I try to change the feed-url. But I know that the url i correct. I have not change anything and it work before the error.
What is the feed URL you are trying to use? Also, where are you seeing the error? You mention trying to customize an admin panel in the dashboard. What is the name of the panel you are trying to add your feed to?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hello!
On this site http://ostvast.wordpress.com/ there is a RSS feed : Skolbibliotket. If you click on the RSS-symbol you will se the feed:
http://bibvik.wordpress.com/tag/ungdom/feed/This feed does not work on the blog.
When I check the RSS-widget in the admin panel (Appearance / widgets / RSS) for the blog http://ostvast.wordpress.com/ is everything ok. The feed has the correct URL. But, if I try to copy the URL och paste it and save there is an error*. If I try to save it again its ok, but the feed does not work. I have not change anything on this blog and the feed works fine before this error.

Hi there,
The feed is invalid due to the content found in your post: http://bibvik.wordpress.com/2014/01/24/om-du-gillade-systrar-i-jeans-sa-gillar-du-kanske-ocksa
I set that post to draft status, and your feed validated:http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbibvik.wordpress.com%2Ftag%2Fungdom%2Ffeed%2F
I’m not sure caused the issue, but my best guess is that there’s a invalid character in the paragraph the follows the “Systrar i jeans / Ann Brashares” heading.
Out of curiosity, do you use Microsoft Word to draft your posts, or in some other way write the text elsewhere, and then paste it in?

Hello!
Ok! Interesting that one post can cause this problem! I dont use Word (perhaps sometimes), but copy and past text from difference webbsites and sometimes send them in a mail (outlook).
I will be aware of that in future posts.
But, when I checked the post http://bibvik.wordpress.com/2014/01/24/om-du-gillade-systrar-i-jeans-sa-gillar-du-kanske-ocksa so it was not published, just a draft, so when I publish it everything was all good again.
The feed works fine again! Thanks!

I think I misunderstood you. The feed works fine now, but perheps it will be a problems now when I published this post again. If so, I know that I need to check or delete that post.

Right. That is where the problem lies… good idea next time you are pasting text from an outside source to use the “Paste as plain text” option shown here: https://cloudup.com/crsEv1pdrQU
The reason being that you can bring over characters (when pasting) that will invalidate your feed. This is a common occurrence with pasted text on websites, so use some caution if you want to keep your feed valid.

You will want to edit the feed before republishing, or the feed will be broken again. my best guess is that there’s a invalid character in the paragraph the follows the “Systrar i jeans / Ann Brashares” heading. Probably a good idea to delete that existing paragraph, and retype it, or switch to “Text” mode and see if you can locate the character.

Yes, i will use “paste as plain text” in future post and check the heading “Systrar i jeans”.
Thanks for your help!
