Those should be the terms of service or agreement that you put the check mark in the box when you signed up.

Does that cover whther you can post an article from someone elses blog? post an article from an online news source like the new york times, etc. I guess I am lookig for the proper etiquette in posting so I don’t get sued. Thanks!

If you don’t already know, you sound like you’re headed for a fall.

No, you can’t take entire articles and repost them: that is stealing. You can summarize or take a snippet of an article if you link to the source so your readers can read the whole thing on the original site. You might want to look this blog over:

If you take anything, make a clickable link back to the source. Most have told me that just as long as they link back, then most of the time it’s okay. Pictures are iffy. If they’re from an agency, then definitely link back. From another blog, link back. Basic type pictures from Google, then those you can let slide.

Just keep common courtesy in mind. How would you feel if you found an article you had made republished elswhere in its entirety and no one asked or told you?

If you find an article you want to use just include a link to the post in your own, or ask the author for permision.

I’ve found the vast majority of non comercial bloggers will allow you to use their posts so long as you include a link back and make it clear they’re the author. Comercial bloggers can be a bit difficult over it, but a lot of them follow the same as the non comercial bloggers.

In all cases, if in doubt ask. Better than getting hit with cease and desist letters. I was hit with one of those when i first started blogging >.< they arent fun to recieve, and it makes talking with the originator very difficult.

As has been mentioned, it’s common courtesy. What uses some allow for their work may differ from others. If in doubt, ask the copyright owner first. Some may allow it with a link back, some may tell you to “fu#k off and write your own stuff”, some may allow it for a fee, or with other conditions…..the copyright owner holds all the cards on the negotiations about their work.
