Rules on deletion of HTML comments within a post?

When editing using the HTML edit panels,
When commenting out portions of a post using <– comment text here –>

I find that my comments can be swept out of a post (that is: deleted), with the rest of the post surviving, but don’t know what occasions this occurs. This occurs both inside and outside of an HTML list,

for example, but such HTML comments within a post are not removed when the comment is alone in its own post without any other HTML. Yet, also, I have some HTML comments within a list, that are not deleted upon saving.

What rules does the WordPress formatter / re-writer actually use?
    Is there a reference?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone use that in a post and I’m not sure if it is even allowed in posts and pages.

You would have to talk directly with staff about that at http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ .

    I’ve used it without problems—
it’s been more than a year on some complicated tables. Switching from the visual to html editor (and vice versa), occasionally does some strange and unexpected things. But I just checked a couple of posts with the comments, switched back and forth, and had no problem. Perhaps it’s an oddity in lists?
If support has information, it would be good if you could let us know here.
