Running a WP.com account through WP.org
-
Hi,
I recently signed up for a free wordpress.com account blog and then upgraded to own my own domain.
I thought this would allow me to upload free theme templates, but I am finding this is not so (please correct me if i am wrong).
I think that I should have signed up for a wordpress.org account? Is this right?
If so, can I run my current domain through wordpress.org?Please help, I feel like I have been sifting for weeks through information without a straight answer and I am afraid to begin anything in my blog for fear of losing information if I have to re-purchase and re-start elsewhere.
Thanks!

Domain mapping here at wp.com is exactly what it says: you can map your wordpress.com blog to a different domain. The only thing this changes is the URL displayed in the address bar.
If you want to upload different themes, then yes, you need a wordpress.org blog. And yes, you can use the domain you’ve already purchased for this. But you will also need hosting which will also cost money. Ask in the WP.org forums about how to set this up.

You can also look into the CSS upgrade here, but please do NOT purchase it if you’re not up to speed on CSS. Overall, it’s cheaper than going with independent hosting, but you can’t just copy/pasta themes from elsewhere. You will need to adapt them yourself. It’s like translating from Japanese or something. Use the free preview to test your changes and when you’ve got them working, THEN buy the upgrade.
