    Dear WordPress…

As I’m typing here, I’m quite mad at you…and I don’t know if “mad” is a good description
Since last night, when I want to blog, I get this message about script that runs … how can i solve it..it’s driving me mad!

Last weekend, I spent about 5 hours to get my post perfect – did some search…found some links to add in my post..uploaded audio files with images ..last night, when I added a few more images and pushed “published”…the “bomb” exploded…GONE are all my hotlinks, gone are all my images, apart from 2… and you know how long it takes for WP to upload an image..and you have to upload them individually (i know about the gallery..i’m not using it- it doesn’t work faster)… and where’s my time i spent in finding those sites with links!! I wonder if you know how one feels if this happens…

I copied what was left to my blogger-blog…uploaded 5 of those images in an instant… my draft is still on blogger…it took me about 20 seconds to do what takes me about 10 min in WP. why? do we need a slow WP. I do have a fast PC… enough memory…why did Blogger not coming up with the script message? what am i doing wrong…i’ve got my blog at WP now for a year+ and it’s the first time i’m getting this message…i don’t feel like blogging with WP anymore! any help?
    Thank you!

If you want to contact staff, use the Support button. They don’t hang around the forums much.

    Hi raincoaster,
    Thanks!

I’m just wondering…why WordPress Support hasn’t come back to me yet…I’ve contacted them via Support and haven’t heard from them…does it take a week or longer..have they got many problems to sort out? Was wondering what’s the average “waiting” time as I get this script message (see image-link) with even a new post where there’s nothing uploaded/written.:(

    @chessalee

I don’t know that the issues you are seeing are due to something wordpress “did,” but I have a couple suggestions. Due to the fact that your blog is very image intensive and your posts are very long, I strongly suggest that you show less posts on your main page since it takes so long to load even with my 5mb connection. Go to settings > reading and under “Blog pages show at most” take it down to say 3. Alternately, or in addition, I strongly suggest that you use the more tag in your long posts to make what shows on the main page shorter: http://support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/ .

W3C’s XHTML validator indicates 129 errors in the posts on your main page. The actual number of errors could be less, because one error toward the top of the page can cause errors to be reported lower down in the page. To help keep this from happening, go to settings > writing and check the box next to “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click the “save changes button at the bottom of the page. Next, open each post on your main page for edit and make one small change (such as adding a space and then deleting it) and then click the “update post” button and the wordpress software should fix any errors it finds for you.

The script error you are seeing could be related to the amount of time it takes your main page to load since it has so many images. In other words, the script is waiting to run, but because the page takes so long to load, the script reaches its set “timeout” period and then your browser reports the issue.

Cut down on the number of posts shown, and make the change in settings > writing, and edit your posts and see if that does not cure the issue.

One other suggestion. Some of your image file sizes are quite large which will make them load more slowly. I offer this FAQ on image optimization for your consideration: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/08/optimise-your-images/ . Typically from my experience, especially with an image intensive blog like yours, if you can keep the images under 50k file size it can help a lot, and some of your chessboard images are 132k.

I wouldn’t go back and redo the images you already have inserted, but it is something to consider for future images.

    hi thesacredpath!

Thanks a lot for your advice which I appreciate, it sounds like it make sense to me. I will try everything you’ve suggested here – later tonight – and report back to you here once i’ve done it. Well, by meaning WP “did” was the only way I could put it..as I didn’t have a cooking clue what caused the problem and I felt like i was getting really potty with these messages and that just after I’ve renewed my subscription in Dec.
Speak to you much later then!

    hi thesacredpath!

My problem… if i do that with previous posts…”more tag”…then with the current problem, i’m going to lose all my other hotlinks like it happened in that post on draft! So i will first try to reduce the posts to see if that solves the problem, but i’m not going to try making ANY changes with anything else done previously…

  • Unknown's avatar

    hi thesacredpath

Done it, my posts are now reduced to 1 only and i still get that message, also, even if it’s a new post where there’s nothing written, i still get it. I can’t explain this now. I’m not running any software on my pc that could cause any funny “behaviour”, i’ve got only WordPress open at the moment. And I never got messages like this before and you can have a look at my other chess posts…plenty (even more) graphics on some posts. Even PGN-viewers where you play through games interactively.

I have carefully read everything thesacredpath has advised and I cannot offer you any more help that he has already offered. I’m sorry to say that IMO the problem is NOT with wordpress. The problem is that your images are not optimized and they are very large. IMO unless or until you optimize the images, reduce their size, as well as, reducing the number of images you have in each post it’s not likely that you will solve this problem. :( However, as you have a support ticket out Staff may get back to you with some solution that I’m not aware of. Best wishes for a happy ending.

Did you try what I suggested below:

To help keep this from happening, go to settings > writing and check the box next to “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click the “save changes button at the bottom of the page. Next, open each post on your main page for edit and make one small change (such as adding a space and then deleting it) and then click the “update post” button and the wordpress software should fix any errors it finds for you.

The reason I ask is that W3C is still reporting 126 errors, and with that many errors things can get mucked up.

Also, I just tried loading your site again and this time Safari 3 reported an error for me as well and it is due to a link in your blog somewhere: http://www.amatomu.com/log.php?cid=dea50be8241617b1fc8bb82d2f087768b86300ba . That site is either down, or is having major problems and may very well be the cause of the issues. I googled it and it has something to do with South African blogosphere. I tried going to http://www.amatomu.com and that site is completely down. My browser never connects.

    Two other suggestions:

    1. log out clear your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and then try again. It could be that your browser is pulling some files from the cache that is causing problems.

    2. What browser and browser version are you using? I get no warnings in Firefox 3 or Safari 3. If you are using Internet Explorer, and if you have Firefox, try Firefox and see if you encounter the same problem.

  • Unknown's avatar

You need to remove the link I referenced for the South African blogosphere at least until they get the site back online and working again. If you notice, the log.php in the URL THAT is a script and with the site down that is most likely the “script” that your browser is having issues with.

    @chessalee

You also have some real problems with the HTML in your sidebar, especially when it comes to font colors, which you have used extensively. Not a problem as long as the HTML is properly done.

What you have is that you have declared a color for a section of text, but then not properly terminated that color before starting another one as below:

<font color="red">this is red text. <font color="green">this is green text. <font color="purple">this is purple text. etc.

What you want to do is the following:

    `<font color=”red”>this is red text.</font> <font color=”green”>this is green text.</font> <font color=”purple”>this is purple text.</font> etc.

You have to end the font color tag before beginning a different color or it will mess things up royally using the ending font tag </font>

I forgot my ending ` above

    <font color="red">this is red text.</font> <font color="green">this is green text.</font> <font color="purple">this is purple text.</font> etc.

    hi thesacredpath and timethief

I appreciate all the help and I will spend time now trying to sort it out. Thanks again, nice having you around trying to solve this for me! I will remove that Amatomu-link too. I will come back to you again, but will probably will have to be tomorrow night, I don’t know if i will have enough time to sort out everything tonight, will try and do as much as i can and come back to you too. Thanks again!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry, forgot to say I have Internet Explorer 7, will try Firefox first and see what happens. I have FF also on my pc.

  • Unknown's avatar

    hi thesacredpath
I’ve done everything exactly like you said, everything as in everything…and in Explorer I got the same message AGAIN. (sorry, i’m not shouting…:) – also, the Saffa-site (Amatomu) worked when i clicked on the link…but i have removed the link.
but in FireFox…100% without the message! So, my question…why could I blog all the way without any problems..for more than a year, some posts (where i blogged big international chess tournaments (Topalov/Anand) with large amounts of chess graphics… and nothing happened…and suddenly one winter’s day, I tried to blog and have about 6 images, some sort of small, some audio files and i get this message…out of the blue…and keep on getting it even with noting in the post..after my cache was cleared etc etc Is it explorer playing up from time to time?

Well, now that i know FF works with it, I can now try my blogpost

Thank you thesacredpath! You were really very helpful and I do appreciate your time and effort you put in even to visit my blog to help sorting it! Wish I could do something to make up!
Thanks to you to timethief for your input.

  • Unknown's avatar

sorry for that error…it should read…”thanks to you too, timethief!

  • Unknown's avatar

Well I’m sorry we did not get rid of the problem with IE, but one thing I will offer is that IE is problematic when it comes to errors and such in HTML, and it is actually very buggy. Currently there are 173 reported bugs in IE7 and the new IE8 beta is up over 200. By contrast, Firefox 3 and Safari 3 each have only 1 reported bug. IE also requires “special treatment” when doing web design since it never has respected web standards. I had high hopes for IE 8 when MS announced that it would be web standards compliant, but it is not looking good at this time, but I will give it a chance since it is still in Beta and not final release.

You might want to contact support on this issue and explain to them what you are seeing with IE and if possible give them the exact wording of the script message that comes up. Perhaps there is something in the background that is causing the issue or perhaps they will be able to track it down to something specific in your blog.

The number of errors on your main page has gone from 126 to 86, and that is always a good thing. The fewer errors the better.

There are still some reported “font” tags missing, so I would suggest as you have the time go through the text widgets and correct the code as I explained above.

  • Unknown's avatar

Just to let you know, I am now seeing NO errors in my log when I load your page in Safari 3.
