Ryu Template Issues

  • Unknown's avatar

The Ryu theme is not displaying properly when I post anything other than a “standard” format. The “image” format is not displaying the image, and the text is suddenly centered. The “gallery” format is making the post title go below the actual post content. Any help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t know what your idea of “properly” is: the whole idea of alternative post formats (which you’re not obliged to use) is that they display posts in a different way, to distinguish one type of post from another. Yes, a gallery format post on Ryu will display the title below the gallery. And yes, the text in an image format post is centered (because the image format is used to highlight an image, possibly with a short description as well; it’s not used for a regular post that happens to include an image).
As for “not displaying the image”, you haven’t inserted any image in your latest post, so what image would you expect?

If you look at some examples posted from the Ryu template, they have consistent posts with image area, blog title, then content following. That’s simply all I’m looking for.

If this is something that is accomplished through custom CSS, that’s fine, I just need to understand that’s how I’d get the visual consistency I’d prefer.

As for the image format, I actually have inserted an image as a “featured image”, and it’s not showing up. When you insert the image into the actual body, it displays as a small inset, which is not what the theme shows.

Does anyone else have some constructive insight? I’d appreciate it!

When you’re still unfamiliar with how things work, and you don’t understand a reply, that doesn’t mean the reply isn’t “constructive”. (Click my username and check my blog to see if you’ll find “someone else” who can give you more “insight” on wordpress.com themes.)

    a) If you’re looking for consistency, you stick to the standard format. As I already said, alternative post formats are designed for the opposite: differentiation. And as I already said, you don’t have to use them: you don’t need an image format post to display an image, and you don’t need a gallery format post to display a gallery.

    b) Setting a featured image to a post isn’t the same as inserting it. Setting a featured image means designating that this image should be used in a special way (the way varies from theme to theme). Inserting an image means putting it into the regular content of the post (via the Add Media button). A featured image on Ryu will show above the post title, and you don’t want that: you need to insert an image the normal way. If you tried this and it displayed “as a small inset”, you probably selected the wrong size option (or didn’t select a size option). You can try again, so I can check the code of your page and tell you what you’re doing wrong.

Another urgent issue with Ryu: I need to change a link to Facebook from my personal to an fb page, but the theme adjustment page keeps reading and I can’t overwrite/change the link. Any solutions? thx;)

I’m not trying to be rude, I am just looking for answers to my questions, rather than a reiteration of what I have asked. I am quite taken aback by the tone of your responses… I’ve worked a bit on the .org portion of WP with my previous job, and have had nothing but wonderful, helpful people in the support forums.

I understand the mechanics of inserting images vs. setting featured images. The setting feature is simply not displaying for me. I understand that I have the choice of formats. I understand that the posts, as a standard, are unique. Thanks for all your help on that…

Moving ahead, for anyone that will venture into this territory, I will try to make it supremely clear. :D I love the consistency that this blogger has achieved with the Ryu template: http://anthonybubel.com

Is this something one can do within the standard template? Thus far, what I have tried to do to replicate that format hasn’t been successful.

If not, will simply upgrading to the “custom” form of the theme allow me to make those changes?

I am not used to working with templates in WP, so perhaps I’m just being too particular for something that’s supposed to be easy. :)

    Thanks!

And annekatrinehaansbaek, just to be clear… Are you trying to link a general Facebook page, or one that you “own”?

    a) If you think my initial reply was nothing but a reiteration of what you asked, then you definitely didn’t understand it: I confirmed that this is how things are supposed to look, because you complained about them as if they were bugs. But that’s not all I said, is it?

    b) If you understand, do you really need someone to tell you that if you want consistency you only use one post format?

    c) Moving ahead, re http://anthonybubel.com:
    • All posts are image format posts.
    • The images are regularly inserted images, not featured images; originals at least 1272px wide, full-size option.
    • The text isn’t centered because it hasn’t been inserted in the main edit box, it has been inserted in the Excerpt module.

Thanks Laura – it’s my (own) company page, I am trying to link to (which was made after I started working on my website using Ryu, so initially I just linked it to my personal profile on FB – and now it’s stuck! :-/)
By the way – I am having some of the same..well, ‘experiences’ as you with the Ryu theme. Takes so much time to get to know their strenghts and weaknesses!

    @annekatrinehaansbaek
    Hello there,
Will you kindly provide the URL for your blog wearing the Ryu theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am struggling to get my image posts to show up in the specialised way spoken about in the theme description – with the background of the post being detected from the image (as seen on http://anthonybubel.com). Any help?

  • Unknown's avatar

You can start by pasting the URL of the blog you’re talking about: the one linked to your username is using Newsworthy.

Ignore me – it seems to be working now. I took my blog off private and it worked fine
