?s about Farsi formatting support, e-commerce

Hello, we are looking for a website builder to transition to. We already own a domain through GoDaddy.
    1) Does WP properly support Farsi? As in, NOT shift around words, punctuation, or any other formatting problems for Farsi/Persian …I couldn’t find a clear, confirming answer about this in the forums nor something relevant from a recent date. We have had problems with this before, where once the Farsi text is pasted in, direction of the text changes, word order changed, and punctuation was flipped, which is a nightmare to edit over and over.
    2) Next, we have limited book products we sell: we previously used PayPal buttons. Would we need to continue using PayPal buttons or would we be using built in commerce in WP?
    3) What are the transaction fees? Where can I find the details regarding transaction fees?
    4) Which plans do we have to choose from if we want to sell a few books and accept donations through our website if we’re with WP?

Thanks! Appreciate your time and help.

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi Aida,

Right now you’re posting in the support forums for the hosting provider, WordPress.com, while your question is more regarding the open source WordPress software. That software is made by the community on WordPress.org.

The WordPress software is available in many languages, including Farsi. All translations of the software is done by the same community of volunteers who make the software. You can find the Farsi translation project for WordPress here:

    https://translate.wordpress.org/locale/fa/

As you’ll see there, there are different translation projects for WordPress itself, and for different themes and plugins. So while WordPress is translated 100% into Farsi, it’s not guaranteed that individual plugins or the theme you’re using are. In that case, you can contribute your own translations, or else you can contact support for the specific theme/plugin to ask if a translated version of their product might be available somewhere else.

As long as your site language is set to Farsi, all text on your site should display in the correct order (provided a specific string has an available translation), though bugs in either WordPress or specific themes/plugins can sometimes cause issues with this.

Here on WordPress.com we use our own dashboard interface, and offer a number of features not included in the open source version of WordPress, so we have our own translation project for the version of WordPress we offer:

    https://translate.wordpress.com/projects/wpcom/fa/default/

As with WordPress.org, most translations of WordPress.com are also contributed by our volunteer community.

    2) Next, we have limited book products we sell: we previously used PayPal buttons. Would we need to continue using PayPal buttons or would we be using built in commerce in WP?

WordPress has no ecommerce features built in. Extra functionality like that is added via plugins. For example, the most popular option for an ecommrece site is the WooCommerce plugin. In addition to that plugin, you’ll then use a payment gateway plugin for the actual payments processing, and you can use any plugin for any payment processor in the world.

Here on WordPress.com, using WooCommerce requires our Pro plan, though we also offer other options using either PayPal or Stripe on our Starter plan:

    3) What are the transaction fees? Where can I find the details regarding transaction fees?

This will depend on the payments processor you use, and fees would be charged by that payment processor directly. So that’s something you’ll need to check with the payment processor you want to use.

For the Payments block (powered by Stripe) we offer on WordPress.com, you can find the fees we charge at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/payments/#related-fees – that’s the only option we support where we levy the transaction fees on our end.

    4) Which plans do we have to choose from if we want to sell a few books and accept donations through our website if we’re with WP?

If you were to host your site here on WordPress.com, and wanted a fully-integrated online store, with shopping cart, shipping options, payments processing, and stock and order management built in, you’ll need a plugin like WooCommerce, and that requires our Pro plan.

Our other options, mentioned at the ecommerce link I shared above, are available on the Starter plan – if you only sell a low volume of products and are fine with processing orders manually using a contact form, those are an option.

For accepting donations you can also see:

That’s a lot of information, so please let me know if anything is unclear or if you have any other questions :)
