Same old question: post order

I’ve had a look round some existing threads here, but none has really provided a satisfying answer to the problem. I’m in the process of migrating my blogs from Blogger to WordPress. I’d been impressed with the options and feedback I’d heard from other WordPress users.

    This question relates to:
    http://jamesbrownontherails.blogspot.com/
    which will hopefully become
    http://jamesbrownontherails.wordpress.com/

However, all was going smoothly until it became obvious that WordPress doesn’t support anti-chronological posting (i.e. the oldest post first, the newest last) … something that a simple javascript piece of code can do on Blogspot (see the blogspot page … the page loads and then automatically flips). The blog is a month long travelogue, so it’s pretty vital that it’s read in order. I’m certainly not satisfied with the FAQ responce I read on WordPress that says that anti-chronological posting means it’s technically not a blog: hardly an appropriate responce, especially since blogging is a media that is still evolving.

Since it would be good to keep the size down, converting the blog to pages might work, but with the already complicated process of porting and re-sizing images (there are over 185 posts) this really doesn’t appeal. Is there a bot that can automatically create a page by combining a specified period of posts in chronological order?

Or do I have a week of late nights ahead of me manually re-formatting the whole blog? Is there any possibility that there is a fix out there? I simply don’t have the funds to host this blog privately, I’m afraid.

    Thanks everyone,

    James, Montréal

PS… note that http://jamesbrownontherails.wordpress.com/ will be changing sporadically as I play around with it.

Also, the Blix theme, I have successfully created some pages, but they do not appear automatically in the green bar beneath the title image. Any suggestions?

The WordPress software does actually support anti-chronological posting with a plugin.

The WordPress MultiUser software that runs this site does not.

Sorry that you don’t like the answer I gave earlier but considering that the concept of posts in date order with latest first is what is accepted with the blogging community. That’s how WordPress does it. That’s how Drupal does it. That’s how SixApart does it. That’s how Blogger does it. That’s how Typepad does it. That’s how b2 does it. That’s how pMachine does it. That’s how Nucleus does it. That’s how PHPNuke, PostNuke, Mambo, Xoop, Joomba, Geeklog, Typo3 and Back-end do it though those are more CMSes. Heck, even Blogshares and Wikipedia list is as a requirement for defining a blog. You yourself state that you have to hack Blogger to display it the way you want it to. That’s making a change from what is accepted to your own site. In other words, you’ll changing it from what’s accepted as what a blog is defined as.

You may think blogging is still developing but looks like chronological posting is pretty much accepted as a standard.

As to your second question, you’re created Posts. The green bar is for Pages. They are two seperate things in WordPress. The Pages stay seperate from the normal Post system and are not in the categories nor date structure.

Sorry, but there are most definitely five ‘pages’ created (and titled ‘ONE’ through ‘FIVE’) on the pages tab of the Manage control… slightly bemused as to where they are, as I’ve entered some blah blah to make sure they don’t get ignored as being empty. Will try again…

a-ha, they’re appearing now, third time lucky clicking ‘publish’. Thank you for taking the time to respond, it looks increasingly like wordpress may not be the service for me.

By the way, your pictures are not displaying. Blogger doesn’t allow hotlinking. You’re going to have to transfer them over.

As to the Pages, make sure you’re clicking on Publish and not Save when you’re done. Some folks have gotten confused overe that in the past. Save is there just to save a draft and not to put it on the site.

Sounds more like you need a free host. I have a feeling that what ever platform you wind up with, you’re going to need to hack it for the anti-chronological posting issue.

Ah, yes the pictures… that’s another issue I’ll have to deal with :) I’ve literally only just begun the transition, so if I were to jump ship permanently I’m going to have to a lot of re-processing of photos…
