  I can’t get page to look the way it appears on the sample theme.

  I encourage you to read the steps mentioned on this page (on the left) https://wordpress.com/theme/gateway to configure your homepage to show off your best work with a bold headline, a call to action button, Featured Content, or a video on the homepage.
