hi! i have a WP site running now. i would like to save it *as is* and deactivate it temporarily, but make a copy i can edit and make live for a few months.

what is the easiest, SAFEST way to do this?
i need to be sure i can go back to the original version easily at any time.

    thanks!

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

The safest way to do this, would be to use a local, offline version of WordPress on your device/machine.

Applications like https://localwp.com/ are really handy with creating WordPress installations with one click.

Now to get the site from the live server to the local server, you could use a plugin like All in One WP Migrate: https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-migration/ – which will download the site to one file.

You can keep the file for safe keeping somewhere special if need be as well as use it to move the site from place to another.

If you’re looking to use WordPress.com, to get the site from a local installation to WordPress.com, you could also use this plugin too.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you—this is really helpful. It sounds like a great way to back up the whole site.

Is there another way to just preserve the entire site as a duplicate online? I want to be able to switch back to it when I need to, but also edit the current version.

  • Hello there,

    Glad this has been useful.

You would need to consult with the hosting provider for this, mainly because it sounds like a duplication could require additional server space.

    I hope this helps.
