Saving a resized photo

Hi; I am new to wordpress blogging and have figured out some things, but am really stuck on how to resize and save a photo once I’ve uploaded it to a post. Here’s what I know: in edit mode, click on the photo. I see two icons, one to delete the photo and another to adjust it. I click on a smaller percentage re size, and see the photo get smaller, but it doesn’t save the resize. I’ve tried going to the advanced tab that does have an update (?) icon, but that doesn’t seem to do the trick.
Also, as long as I’m askin’ :-), can you explain the difference between categories and tags? Sorry for such basic questions, and merci mucho ahead of time. –Linda

Also, have you tried selecting the picture and dragging a corner to resize it in the visual editor? That is not the most precise or best way, but it should work.
