Saving changes in customization of themes

Is there any way I can make changes to my theme, Boquet, without publishing it? or do I have to get everything done in one shot then publish? Or publish half done website?
If I upgrade from Free will that change? If so what do I have to upgrade to?
What do I have to upgrade to to get Premium themes for free? Or do I get the same free templates no matter what level I am at and pay for the rest?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Is there any way I can make changes to my theme, Boquet, without publishing it? or do I have to get everything done in one shot then publish?

It’s not clear what you’re asking. The site https://adogsblog2017.wordpress.com/ is publicly visible now. Regarding modifications of the theme available at Customize on a free account with the Bouquet theme activated, it doesn’t matter whether the site is publicly visible or private when you make such modifications. What sort of changes are you referring to?

If I upgrade from Free will that change?

Not necessarily. See the WordPress.com Plans page. The Personal Plan doesn’t include Custom Design. The Premium and Business Plans do. Custom Design allows greater ability to modify the design of the site than is available on the Free and Personal Plans.

What do I have to upgrade to to get Premium themes for free?

The Premium Themes support page says:

On a site with the Premium or Business plan, you can switch to any premium theme at no extra cost, as many times as you’d like. Without a Premium or Business plan, premium themes may also be purchased individually.

I forgot to provide a link to the Premium Themes support page.

Feel free to set the entire site to private while you work on it. This way, you can work on different parts of the site until it is set up just the way you like. Later when you’re ready, you can make the site visible to the public again. These privacy settings are available for everyone, regardless of upgrades.

Thank you dcoleonline. I’ll try that. It doesn’t make sense that your site has to be saved and published as you work on it. People get a half done site to look at until you can go back and finish it. Not good once I get subscribers.
musicdoc1 I was modifying the theme, you know, colors, title, menus, etc. There is no button to save changes and go back to finish it later. There is only a “save and publish” button. So a half done site is online. so I might as well just click the “save and publish” button anyway since it published itself anyway.
Which is apparently the case now. I never pressed the publish button. The same thing happened to another site I have with WordPress. I don’t have a lot of time so sometimes it is days before I can go back and finish what I was doing. It seems to just publish itself.

    @naturalobservations,

I was modifying the theme, you know, colors, title, menus, etc.

Some features can be saved without publishing them. There’s no way to save alternate titles, and color modifications, but alternate menus can be saved without being published. You may also save inactive widgets, and custom headers. Also, any content type (post, page, project, testimonial) may be saved in draft or pending review status without publishing it. Let us know if you want help with regard to any of these options.

Nevertheless, it seems like setting the site to private might be the best option in this case.

I never pressed the publish button.

There is no publish button for the site. There are privacy options, and each new site is automatically set on Public. See the Privacy Settings support page for descriptions of those settings, and instructions on how to modify them.

    Thank you musicdoc1.
    Out of curiosity…
Then what is the “Save and Publish” button for in customization?
I know about saving in draft with content.

    You’re welcome. : )

I’ve often wondered why WP.com chose the phrase “Save and Publish” at Customize, since I presume that on a private site it would still say “Save and Publish” when you modify a feature there, even though nothing is being published by taking that action. Why not simply have an “Update” or perhaps “Save Changes” button instead?

  • It doesn’t make sense that your site has to be saved and published as you work on it.

@naturalobservations: Ah, I see. So when you look at the “Save and Publish” button in the Customizer, it seemed like that would make your entire site live to the world.

It actually doesn’t control whether or not the public can see your site, though. The Privacy Settings that @musicdoc1 and I mentioned earlier actually determine whether or not others are allowed to see your site.

I never pressed the publish button

By default, all sites on WordPress.com are publicly viewable. If you want to make your site private while you work on it, just do the following:

    1. Visit My Site > Settings
    2. Scroll down a bit and look for the Privacy section.
    3. Click the bubble next to Private
    4. Click the blue Save Changes button.

This allows you to limit your site’s audience to just yourself and anyone else that you decide to invite to the private site before you reveal it to the public again. This way, anything published on your site will be limited to the audience you’ve chosen via these privacy settings.
