Or are you using the new post editor Beep Beep Boop? -
Hi Dan,
In addition to the “Save Draft” option the post editor attempts to auto-save every two minutes. The new editor saves that information in to your local browser history and will prompt you with a Restore message later on:
Some browser extensions like Lazarus Form Recovery for Chrome can save information within your browser as well.
I personally use the new editor. If the Save Draft appears to be “stuck” I copy my post and paste it into an offline text editor (like TextEdit), just be safe — and then refresh my post editor and am prompted with that restore message. I then re-attempt to save the draft so it’s in my blog’s files not just browser.
Refreshing the browser window is the best way to get a post editor ‘unstuck’ if it appears to not complete saving or publishing. So it’s a really a personal preference of how you want to save that data while you refresh the window.

Why not recommend using the classic editor where the autosave actually saves what we create to the servers for our blogs?Unless or until that lame behavior of the new post editor that saves only to the browser is addressed I will not use the new editor.

If a draft appears to be stuck while saving in the /wp-admin/ editor I’d recommend the same course of action. (Paste in a text doc, refresh, re-attempt to save/publish.) Dan did not even mention what editor he’s using — this same problem of a draft appearing not to save could very well happen in the /wp-admin/ editor if the browser is having trouble connection to our servers. The auto-save function in /wp-admin/ requires the same connection to our servers the manual save needs.
The issue here seems less about what editor is preferred and more about “how can I make sure I don’t lose these 1000 words” while still needing to refresh the page and check everything out.
