Saving drafts erratic, unable to preview posts

  • Unknown's avatar

Since mid-morning today, it’s taken multiple attempts to save a draft, and sometimes they won’t save at all.

In addition, the “Preview” function is not working. When I click on “preview”, nine times out of ten all I get is “about:blank”.

Both problems occur from the text and visual editor tab. I’ve done the usual cookies/cache routine, and re-started my computer.

This is happening both in IE and in my favored browser, updated Firefox with no add-ons.

    Thanks for checking on this.

Are your sure you have third party cookies enabled?
I’m asking because that’s the usual solution to what you have posted.

    Preview Problems and Third-Party Cookies

I do have them enabled. I just double-checked, to be sure settings hadn’t changed somehow.

I was in the middle of working on a new post when the problem started. I’d been working with no problem, and then it started getting glitchy.

I just tried again, and was able to save my draft 3 out of 4 times, but when I try to preview, it tries to connect for a second, and then I get only “about:blank”.

It’s a mystery, but I do need to be able to preview my post before I put it up. Thanks for stopping by!

Okay are you using the https:// login? It doesn’t sound like it to me. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions

Yes, I’ve had https enabled in my personal settings for some time.

What I’ve been searching for and can’t find is any place to add *.wordpress.com, etc., to a list of trusted sites. Does Firefox do it differently? The support page instructions for Firefox don’t match anything I see in Firefox. They simply say:

    Manage in Firefox:
Go to Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced > Certificates
    Choose your preference.

I have no “Preferences” in my FF menu. If I take the Tools>Options>Advanced>Certificates route, I can’t make heads or tails of anything. If I choose to “view certificates”, I can’t find anything that looks like WP in “servers” or “authorities”, and there certainly isn’t any list of trusted sites (that I can find.)

And now my draft isn’t saving again, even though the https is enabled.

I’m so sorry butcan’t recall where to set this up and I’m limping along today because I misplaced my glasses without even leaving the house last night. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks so much – I’m going to go work with another draft in the meantime, just to see if there’s something with this particular post that’s a problem.

Unbelievable. I think I found the problem.

I tried saving three other drafts, with no problem at all. I could preview them, too. That meant the problem had to be in the post that was giving me trouble.

I couldn’t see it in the visual editor, so I went into the text editor and started combing through it. Buried in the middle of the text was this:

    <img title="More..." src="https://shoreacres.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" alt="" /></span>

Looks to me like a “More” tag. How it got there, I haven’t a clue, but it clearly shouldn’t have been there. I removed it, and <i>voila!</i> I could refresh and preview without a hitch.

I’m going to work on the post tonight, and if everything keeps working fine through some revisions and previews, I’ll mark it “resolved”.

    Thanks, TT!

I’m marking this “resolved”. I’ve not had a single problem tonight, and everything is functioning as it should.

    Thanks again, TT. Much appreciated.
