Hi. Is there a way to break up my pages if i have to many so i wont have alot of pages

  • Hi,

Pages are content you put on your site that will always be there and unlikely to change in the future. Pages are typically things like home page, contact page, about page, legal pages etc. These are permanent fixtures. In most cases, anything you publish from now on should be a post.

If I were you, I would remove as many pages from your main menu as possible and publish them as posts using categories. For example, “Fashion Trends” does not need its own page. It could be a post assigned to a suitable category (e.g. Fashion).

The following support page will help you understand the difference between posts and pages: https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

If you have any other questions, let us know.

So if fashion trends doesn’t need its own page I can just make it as a post instead? And Im confused as to how categories work?

I wanna have pages but because I have so many im trying to limit the amount? And I don’t wanna have the same pages overlapping each other with the same thing or topic

  • Categories are used to organize your posts in an easy to understand way, so that they become easy to find. Please see the following support page to learn more: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

And I don’t wanna have the same pages overlapping each other with the same thing or topic

This is exactly why those pages need to be posts instead. If visitors would want to see other content you published that is related to an item, then it needs to be a post.

After you consult the document about posts and pages, it should help you to understand when you should create a post and when you should create a page.

But will I at least be able to keep some pages. Are there any other pages that don’t need its own page that can be posts instead or just removed

  • The pages that I recommend keeping are the home page, about page, contact page, and maybe the photo gallery. Having too many menu items makes it very difficult for visitors to access the content they need. One reason for that is because all those extra pages are not organized in a way that makes sense.

With posts, they can be organized into categories to make them easier to find. Posts also eliminate all those unnecessary menu items.

My advice to you is to visit other websites and look at what pages are in their menus. Also look at the blog page to get an idea of the type of content that should be a post.

After you review all the information I sent you, it’s up to you to decide what will remain as a page on your main menu. Let us know if you need more help.

  • …and, of course, you need to keep a blog page to display all your posts :-)

Hi again. I used categories as a better way to find and organize my post. But when I add the categories widget all of the categories are not showing

  • Hi there,

Note: Only categories that are attached to posts will be displayed in the widget.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/

However, I see that you still have all those same pages in your main menu. I would copy the content from those pages and create posts instead of pages. That way, the posts will appear in a stream on your blog page. Then you can remove all the unnecessary pages.

If you are still having trouble creating posts, here is a support guide that covers the ways to publish a post: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/

I have one last question. Is there a way to switch categories around like move them up or down. Im trying but can’t seem to figure it out

  • Unknown's avatar

Like for the categories section at the bottom of my site in the sidebar topics (which is the name of my category) is showing at the bottom but I want it to show at the top

  • It is not possible to change the order in the Categories widget.

If you need to show your categories in a certain order, you can build a Custom Menu then add a Custom Menu Widget instead.

But how do u delete categories? And is there a way to change or move them not in the widget but in the settings option under (writing) then categories

  • Go to My SiteSettingsWriting and click on Categories. Click on the three dots to the far right of the category you want to delete. You will then see an option to delete that category.

And is there a way to change or move them not in the widget but in the settings option under (writing) then categories

You cannot change the order of categories in the Categories widget. Please see my previous response.

I suggest you visit https://en.support.wordpress.com/start/ to learn everything you need to know about setting up a site on WordPress.com. It has great video tutorials that will give you a much better understanding of categories, posts, pages, menus and so on.
