Saving old information

  Hi there. I created a free wordpress site a few years back and it is now null and void for what I want to do however I do not want to lose all of the original information and photos. Is there a simple way that I can save or archive this info and start over without creating a new account? Thanks so much.

  Marking the site as private would be a good way to archive it:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

  This means you can login and view the old site at any time without it being visible to the public.

  From there, a new site can be created in your existing account. The two sites would function independently but the old and new sites can be managed from one place.

  Hi Gemma,
  Got it…I marked my site as private however if I create a new site that means I have to come up with a new site name? I cannot use my old one as colleenseiler.wordpress.com?

  That was really my main issue. I want to be able to use my old name, have a clean board to start over with but save my old information.

  Hi Colleen –

  Yes, you achieve this.

  Here is my suggestion:

  1. Create your new site address.
  2. Mark the new site as private.
  3. Create a site export of colleenseiler.wordpress.com and import it on the new site.
  4. Now colleenseiler.wordpress.com can be wiped clean (I’ll help you with that) and you can start a new site here.

  Does that sound like a good plan?

  Hi there,

  Thank you. I did all that (created a new site) and exported my information from my old site but it is not allowing me to import it to my new site. Can you please help me with this?

  @colleenseiler what’s happening when you import?

  Also, if you’ll be careful, this option might be easier for you.

  Head to https://colleenseiler.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs

  Hover over the site name, and choose to change the address.

  You can put in a new name, like colleenseilerarchive.wordpress.com. DO NOT check the box that says “Discard Current Address” — you’ll want to keep the old site.

  When this is done, your content will be on the new address, and the old address will be blank.

  If you run into any trouble, let us know what is happening and we’ll go from there.
