Scaling images in WordPress doesn't affect my storage limit

I recently got a warning that I’m almost up to my Media Library storage limit. (I didn’t think I would reach the cap and didn’t have software for optimizing). I can’t afford WordPress’ upgrades.

I noticed that WordPress has an image scale tool and I have dramatically reduced the file size of my Library’s images by scaling them down.

I’ve done this for about half of the photos in my Media Library, but instead of decreasing my overall storage amount, it has increased it by 1%.

What am I missing with this?

Is there any way to decrease my Library storage amount without deleting my entire library and re-uploading new, optimized images?

    Thanks for any help!

Correct the scaling does not change the stored image size

One workaround would be to register a new blog – use the name you have now and add a number to the name (deltiologydeity2.wordpress.com as an example) – that is free – then you can upload the images in the second blog and then hot link to the pictures stored in the second new blog to be displayed in your current blog – – – upload the image to the new blog – then go to your current blog and “insert from the web” when you add a new image

Yes exchanging the old large images for new optimized images is a fix that is the best but takes a while and only do a few at a time or you will get really burned out – the second blog is a quick free fix

There are many image editing programs that are free – I use Gimp on my PC – it has a lot of power – but if all you want to do is scale images a bit the learning curve should not be too bad

Thanks auxclass for the help – great way to extend the life of my blog as it was going to cap out sooner or later. Your solution will extend it for some time! I could do the same thing with Flickr too.

I’ve read a bunch of posts on this forum and on Google and it seems that once a cap has been reached (or nearly reached) it is impossible to get it lowered.

Even deleting images doesn’t actually lower the overall amount. So it seems like your solution is the only option for me.

    Thanks!

I meant to say and “articles via Google”. Drat lack of editing ability.

You be welcome & good luck

Images need to be deleted from the Media Library to free up space – if an image is deleted from a Post it still stays in the media library so no space is freed up –

note also if you delete an image from the media library the image will be deleted from any post or page it appeared on – that is a major surprise to many folks – so be careful when cleaning up the media library
