Scaling Photos to Reduce Used Media Storage Space

Until recently, I was uploading full-resolution images to my media library (my design experience is in print not web and I didn’t really think it mattered…I’ve since learned otherwise). I discovered that I am starting to run low on storage space and do not want to purchase additional storage space (particularly less than a year into blogging). I tried scaling some of my photos through the media library “edit photo” button, but found that I was INCREASING the space used rather than decreasing (not sure why that would be).

I could easily resize these photos (about 300) in Photoshop and upload them again, but I can’t figure out how that will affect the posts that the photos are “attached” to (will they disappear). Will I have to go back in to each of the posts and insert all of the new images or is there an easier way to connect the new photos (with the same name) to the post?

What would be the best way to go about this to reduce the amount of storage space my current media is occupying and not have to go in and modify each post?

I think that wordpress keeps the original image, and just creates another one at the reduced size. Since wordpress works off of MySQL database, you might wait a few days and see if the usage drops. I think that they typically delete on a schedule, but I don’t know what that schedule is.

If you upload them again, wordpress will change the file name by appending a number to the end of the file name which will break all your links to that image and you will have to edit posts or pages to correct the URL’s to those images.

The WP.com file system appends the date of the upload to the image file name, so the newly uploaded files will have a different name than the ones you originally uploaded, thereby breaking the image link once you delete the originally uploaded files.

I feel your pain, but yes, you will have to manually edit and reinsert all the newly uploaded photos into their relative posts.

You will also want to look at and bookmark this post:
