Scheduled posts

  • Unknown's avatar

Recently the time for our scheduled posts keeps changing prior to publication. We set it for 06:00 GMT and before it publishes it changes either 1 hour or two hours forward to 07:00 or 08:00

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s odd! First, can you make sure your timezone is correct here?

Second, can you let me know whether you’re using the new editor (wordpress.com/post) or the old editor (https://literallystories2014.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php)?

Lastly, does this happen immediately when you try to schedule the post meaning you set it to 6:00 GMT, and then when you press “Schedule,” it changes immediately to 7:00 or 8:00?

    Hi Jeremy

Many thanks for getting back to me so quickly – especially on a Sunday!

There are five of us editing on the site and some of us use the new editor. Most of the posts that have been ‘affected’ were authored by myself using the old editor but I am not certain that is only those posts as we have only just begun to take note of the issue.

The timezone is set as UTC+0. This appears to be an hour behind UK (GMT) . We were previously scheduling posts for 07:00 GMT and they were publishing at 08:00 (post BST). However some have published at 09:00. next week’s posts were all set for 06:00. We checked these sometime later and found that Monday and Tuesday have changed to 08:00 whereas Wednesday through Friday are still showing as 06:00. I believe they remained at the same scheduled time after scheduling and that the change occurred some time later on!
It is not an issue that troubles us greatly but if there is an easy solution we would be grateful if you could let us know.

Again, many thanks for your help.

Thanks for clarifying Adam! I just checked the posts for Monday and Tuesday, but they seem to be scheduled for 6:00 on my side:

Did you or someone on your team change this back by chance?

    Hi Jeremy

Yes I changed them last night after checking all our scheduled posts for this week and yes today’s post published correctly at 06:00 according to the Dashboard. Tomorrow’s story remains at 06:00 also. Please don’t spend any time on this if you have better things to do as it may just be a random occurrence. I will let you know if there any further unscheduled changes to scheduled times.

    All the best

    Hey Adam,

I’d like to make sure this gets corrected! With the posts that eventually change over, are any teammates from other timezones opening up the post and hitting “Schedule” again by chance? I’m wondering if this has to do with how various team members are interacting with the post. In theory, this shouldn’t change since the blog timezone would be set the same.

    Hi Jeremy

Three of us are in the UK. One in Cape Town SA and one in Sweden. Sweden is an hour ahead. I think Cape Town is the same as GMT.

The oddest occurrence was the fact that the scheduled time had changed from 06:00 to 08:00 prior to the scheduled time but had only done this for some stories. I would need to go through them with a fine tooth comb to see who had authored these stories – most are done by myself and the other UK based editor who is the other Admin on the site – and which posts were subsequently edited by other authors to see if there is a pattern.

The issue has only seemingly become apparent since changed to British Summer Time (put forward one hour).

Thank you once again for your continued support.

    Hi Jeremy

Today’s story was due to publish at 06:00 UTC +0 and published at 08:00. Saturday post was scheduled for 12:00 and published at 12:00. Sunday’s post was scheduled for 12:00 and published at 13:00. In between those, Monday and Tuesday posts published as scheduled at 06:00.

Both today and the Sunday post were scheduled by editors outside the UK. Sunday from SA and today’s post from Sweden. 1 hour and 2 hours forward of GMT.

The simple solution is that all posts are scheduled from the same time-zone. I don’t think there is anything else at play here. We will put this revised protocol in place and monitor what happens and get back to you to let you know if this has resolved the issue.

    kind regards

    Hey Adam,

Thank you so much for the detailed debugging. I believe the timezones are at play here. I suspect that when another editor opens up the stories from their timezone, the scheduled time is changing to match their timezone if they press “Update.” In theory though, the time should be set by the blog, not the individual user. Doing a bit more digging on my side.

I can’t seem to find a way to set a different timezone for another user account. The timezone should just be set overall for the blog. Let me know what you experience with the revised protocol. If this fixes the issue, obviously something is at play!
