Scrawl outdented captions not working

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to duplicate the outdented image captions that appear in the theme preview for Scrawl. I have aligned an image to the left and right, tried to resize it smaller, but the caption always appears on the bottom of the image. Is there a trick to it that I’m missing?

    Examples of it working: https://scrawldemo.wordpress.com/aligned-images-and-captions/

    Thanks!

    Hi,

On a test site with the Scrawl theme applied captions appear outdented, as on the Scrawl demo page you’ve linked to above. In my tests captions display outdented on a static page, a post, and on the blog page.

One factor to that might be responsible for yours not displaying outdented is the format assigned to posts. I originally left mine on the default “Standard” format. Have also tried the “Aside” and “Image” formats without changing the result.

I’m going to call for staff attention to the topic. Staff will respond here.

Thank you for your help. I have also tried playing with the post formats. I will give it a second try to see if that manages to fix anything.

I’m also curious if it’s an issue with Gutenberg, perhaps, versus the old editor.

Lastly, what I’m trying to accomplish is a full width image (700 px) with an outdented caption (either side, really), if possible with the available options.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi nicholasarnold,

Could you include a link to a page that has aligned images, so we can check this out?

I’m also curious if it’s an issue with Gutenberg, perhaps, versus the old editor.

It could be. You can switch between editors using the three dots in the upper right, if you’d like to test.

Or, if you’ll send a link to a post or page with this issue (it needs to have left-or-right aligned images on it) we can check for you.

    Hi supernovia,

The site I linked previously, allelous.home.blog, has an image (toward the bottom of the second post) that is aligned to the right. It may not appear that way because I sized the image to match the width of the column (700 px) but it is in fact set aligned to the right.

    Thank you for your help!

  • Okay, I see it now — it was just too large to appear right-aligned.

Can you try removing the block, then re-inserting the image using a classic block instead?

Hm… so I created a new post entirely using the classic editor and it works just fine in the classic editor. I tried re-inserting the image in the new editor and it did not work.

The code for the classic editor caption is:

    [caption id="attachment_33" align="alignright" width="5517"]<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-33" src="https://alleloushome.files.wordpress.com/2019/05/gift-habeshaw-1151991-unsplash.jpg" alt="gift-habeshaw-1151991-unsplash" width="5517" height="3678" /> Test, this caption should be right aligned.[/caption]

While the code for Gutenberg is:

Pastor Tavner's illustration of the growth of a seed. Most of the growth happens underground, where it cannot be seen, but once "breakthrough" happens, it can be seen. Pastor Tavner doesn't stop there, however, he says that true maturity doesn't happen when the tree grows tall, but only when it starts producing fruit.

And if I convert the code to a classic block in the Gutenberg editor like you suggested, it works just fine. You should be able to see both examples in my blog now.

So, does that mean Scrawl needs to be updated for Gutenberg?

    Thanks for your help.

Err… I meant for that code NOT to render anything in the above post (I had both code blocks in backticks), but I can’t edit it now, nor can I preview the post before I post it to make sure it doesn’t render. Sorry about that!
