Scrawl theme — Featured Image for a Page does not output.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello WP braintrust,
    In SCRAWL theme, I can’t output a featured image to a Page, but can for a Post. Is this a bug? Unrelated, I found a guaranteed bug using Scrawl in Safari — the issue being hyperlinks in captions cause the entire caption to drift off the page when hovered over. I’m a free users and reported this, unknowingly, in a WP forum for .org users of the Scrawl theme. An admin there did replicate the problem and reported it at: https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/650
    That was three months ago, though, and still no fix?

    My questions are:
    1. Is Scrawl theme broken for ‘featured images’ on Pages, or was this never supposed to work in the first place?
    2. Is there any way to know if either issue be repaired?
    3. If bugs in WP-built themes are fixed for .org users, are they also automatically fixed for free (wordpress.com) users?

    If it matters, my little test-site is https://noyesgenealogy.wordpress.com/

    Thanks!

    Hi,

    1. On the Scrawl theme, there is no option for setting a featured image on a static page. You can see what types of content a featured image may be displayed on at Customize > Content Options > Featured Images.

    2. Bug report at: https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/650

    Unrelated, I found a guaranteed bug using Scrawl in Safari — the issue being hyperlinks in captions cause the entire caption to drift off the page when hovered over…

    I’ll call for staff attention regarding this report. Staff will respond here.

    3. Staff will respond to your third question as well.

    Hi @musicdoc1,

    Thanks for speedy and helpful reply. Note however, “CONTENT OPTIONS” is *not* an available menu at my end. I’m following instructions as defined here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/content-options/ (and googled this to the hilt before informing you of this).

    Featured Image feature, in Scrawl *page* (not post) “edit” view, is within the page’s settings tab (gear icon in upper-right of display).

    It would seem as though Scrawl was coded/designed to offer “featured image” for both Pages AND Posts (the later, working just fine).

    FWIW, I changed domain/URL in my little test site to: https://todaywehonor.wordpress.com/

    Will stand-by for responses from WP staff on the other two questions.

    Thanks again for your help/guidance. Cheers!

    @noyesgenealogy:

    Note however, “CONTENT OPTIONS” is *not* an available menu at my end.

    Sorry, last night I used the wrong test site, with a different theme applied, in my tests. You are correct. Scrawl doesn’t have Content Options at Customize. However, today my tests indicate that with the Scrawl theme activated:

    1. There is no setting at Customize to determine where featured images are to be displayed. Therefore they will display wherever they’ve been instructed to display by the theme’s designers.

    2. Regarding featured images on a static page, specifically, there is no setting available at Customize to enable their display.

    The only hint I find in the Scrawl theme guide regarding where featured images are displayed on this theme is in the Quick Specs section, which says (at item #3):
    “Featured Images for single posts are 2000 by 1500.”

    Featured Image feature, in Scrawl *page* (not post) “edit” view, is within the page’s settings tab (gear icon in upper-right of display).

    It would seem as though Scrawl was coded/designed to offer “featured image” for both Pages AND Posts (the later, working just fine).

    The option to set a Featured Image is available in the content editors (page, post, portfolio project, etc.) regardless of the theme activated, even on those content types where the theme can not be freely customized to display them. Admittedly this can be confusing.

  • Hi folks, let me see if I can untangle all of these issues:

    Caption jumps in Safari if it includes a link

    @noyesgenealogy
    , I’m not currently able to duplicate this issue with the jumping link. Could you link to an affected post?

    Docs mention pages when it should say post

    @musicdoc1
    it looks like this may have already been updated:

    Featured Images for single posts are 2000 by 1500.

    No featured images on pages
    This particular theme was designed this way

    Missing “Content Options”
    This theme was also designed before Content Options were a regular setting. It does not have them.

    Featured Image option available for pages even though the theme does not display them
    Correct, because you still want images to work with social links and what not, and you might some day switch to a theme that does use featured images. So I recommend setting them for pages anyway.

    Timing on the Bug
    Our team tends to go after the bugs that are affecting more users first. If you’ll send a link to an affected post, I’ll mention this complaint in the Github issue.

    Are bug fixes for .org automatically deployed to .com or vise versa?
    Not necessarily. These are often two separate versions of a theme, so they will have different issues.

    I hope I caught all of the questions; if I’ve missed something or you need more clarification, let us know. Cheers!

    @supernovia,

    Docs mention pages when it should say post

    I never indicated that a doc mentioned pages instead of posts. What I did say was:

    The only hint I find in the Scrawl theme guide regarding where featured images are displayed on this theme is in the Quick Specs section, which says (at item #3):
    “Featured Images for single posts are 2000 by 1500.”

    I probably should have added that the absence of a mention of featured images size for static pages in Quick Specs for Scrawl suggests that pages don’t display featured images.

    The block quote following my quote from Quick Specs section of the theme guide was from @noyesgenealogy’s second post above. I see how that might have been confusing.

  • Ah, that’s what happened. I was busy trying to makes sure I’d found all the questions, and misunderstood your block quote there.

    No worries. I like how you’ve neatly summarized issues in italics. Good idea, one that I might steal from you. : -)

    @supernovia

    @musicdoc1

    Sorry I’m late to the party. Want to provide supernovia their request:
    https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/650

    I should reiterate: this issue is only apparent in Safari. Unfortunately, it’s a that will affect my intended use of the theme however.

    What I wanted to do, was hyperlink the word “source,” in a pair of brackets, after an image caption, to provide a means for readers of this (history-focused) blog to see the source of the artifact on archive.org etc.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi there,

    I’ve added your report to the open bug report about this. As long as our developers know the issue is happening on both versions, it will be fixed for both. However, I’m not able to give you a timeline on when that will be.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @kokkieh Thanks for addressing this issue. Love to lurk if there’s a GitHub link you can share. I’m nervous to use an image caption with a hyperlink until that bug is resolved. Thanks again!

  • In this case the github link will still just be https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/650

    I wasn’t able to duplicate this on my .com site or my .org test site myself, but if the developers can see it’s happening in both versions they’ll likely just fix it at the same time.

    Did you have a link to a post where this issue is happening? I still can’t duplicate it here, so I’m wondering if there’s a clue in that.
