Scrawl theme – how do I turn off the drop cap for the first letter of a post?

I’d like to turn off the automatic drop cap at the start of every post. There is a drop cap toggle, but turning it on or off has no effect on the initial drop cap.

Well, I fudged it by having an empty paragraph at the start of every post. So the issue isn’t fixed as such, and if there is a way around it I’d be interested to know.

Where do you find this toggle? I don’t find one. The determining factor that I did find in my tests is the post format. There are ten post formats to choose from in settings on the Scrawl theme, according to my tests, the lone post format that produces the drop cap is the Standard format.

The Scrawl theme is an older one that we launched several years before we had a block editor. As a result, the drop cap styling is “baked in” on this theme and is not easily turned off. There does however appear to be a few ways you can work around this:
- This theme does make use of post formats, and as @musicdoc1 points out, not all formats use the drop cap styling by default. You could set your posts to use one of these formats instead: https://wordpress.com/support/posts/post-formats/.
- I liked your idea of using an empty paragraph block. If that works for you then there is no harm in continuing to use that trick.
- You can consider adding CSS editing to your site, which will allow you to use code to override the default theme styling and use standard capitalization: https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-ons/
- Switch to a newer theme. Scrawl is unique in that it’s the only theme I know of that has a default dropcap styling. Any other theme you switch to would resolve this issue. https://wordpress.com/themes/

Where do you find this toggle? I don’t find one.
@musicdoc1 I think they are referring to the drop cap option found in the paragraph block, which would not work with this theme since the styling is controlled by theme CSS, and not determined by block settings: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#typography-settings
