Screen Options/Menu

  • Unknown's avatar

I am not able to see screen options when I am trying to edit my menu. I have tried adding two categories to show up in my menu and have spent hours trying to figure it out. The two categories I am trying to add are outfits and teaching.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sorry to clarify. When I try to add the two “categories” to my menu they just don’t show up. So I spent time searching that to fix it I will have to click something in my screen options which is why I am trying to find my screen options. I have read tons of different forums on the subject, watched youtube videos etc. I have deleted them and re added them. I have changed my theme to see if I had an outdated them.

When I try to edit a post and click the three dots at the top – I am still not able to see screen options when I click to see the top menu. I hope this makes sense!

  • Hi there –

Thanks for getting in touch. Looking at the site I see 3 categories linked in the site menu. Do you still need help with this?

When searching for tutorials online you want to make sure they are for WordPress.com and not the general WordPress software. That’s much more of a hands on, DIY process compared to using our managed solution from WordPress.com.

Here are some other helpful resources for getting started.

Write back with more questions. We’re always close by and happy to help.

    Hi There,

Thanks for responding. Yes, I have added the categories but they seem to show up as the link symbol rather than a title with words “Teaching” “lifestyle” etc. So, I have researched for the last few days of how to get the words to show up when I have linked those categories, but have not found a solution.

    Thanks,

  • Hello there,

It looks like this menu has been assigned as the social media menu.

I’d recommend adding the navigation items in the header template here:

    https://firstgradelodge.wordpress.com/wp-admin/site-editor.php?postType=wp_template&postId=pub%2Fjackson%2F%2Fheader-footer-only&canvas=edit&sidebar=%2Ftemplates

Do you know the full menu order you require? We can look to put together some next steps.

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply! I did switch it off of social navigation. When I have it on Primary I am not able to see “Teaching” or “Outfits” categories that I have made and added.

On my Menu: I would like to see

    Welcome

    Blog

    Teaching

    Outfits

    Lifestyle

When I watch videos it looks so easy. However, I am not able to see my categories on the main page. I apologize anything with the code is definitely above me! But I will try my best!

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

I see you are using one of our newer “Block Themes” that allow you to fully customize your theme (as you would any block) in our new Site Editor tools.

In this case, the menu system you are using is not correctly talking to the theme (this has been reported to our engineers) but I can show you a workaroud so that you will have this menu on your site header.

To do that you will want to go to the site editor at this link.

Once you are there, follow the steps I’ve shown in the video linked here, which will connect the menu you created to your site header.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Hi There,

That fixed it! Thank you so much! The video was so helpful! Whenever I watched youtube videos their admin area looked so different than mine and I couldn’t figure out why. Thank you again!

Ah, to clarify that a bit, there are actually two versions of WordPress: The kind you install on a traditional “web host” and manage yourself (the very very DIY “self-hosted” version that web designers and power-users prefer) and the version we offer here on WordPress.com which is custom and optimized for our infrastructure.

The platforms are really quite similar under the surface, but the “self-hosted” version of WordPress is free and open-source, and does not come with support. For this reason you see a lot of site owners trying to help each other out by creating support content to share, like the videos you mention.

On WordPress.com we use a custom dashboard (which works with our service and is much faster) that looks a little different, and our sites have some different capabilities as well. Hence why what you are using seems different.

The good news is that WordPress.com comes with in-house support, so you can just ask us and we’re happy to help. Also if you prefer video learning you may wish to check out our webinars, which are a great way to get up to speed with our tools. You can see replays of our recent webinars here: https://wordpress.com/learn/webinars/webinar-replays/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
