Scribd embed feature in Gutenberg not working consistently

Hi, I have a certain page in my site that links to a couple Scribd documents. I tried the Gutenberg editor today and it seems great so far — I’m always for more customization. However, I have noticed that when trying to embed a couple documents in the page by using the “Scribd” block, and copying the link directly into a new block, one specific document (here in case it’s relevant) makes the embed block spin for a couple seconds and then return “Sorry, we could not embed that content.” Nothing seems unusual, illegal, or otherwise incompatible about the document — I have another Scribd document in the page that has twice as many pages and WordPress displays it perfectly in the embed.<br />Is something different about this document that I didn’t see, or is this a bug with Gutenberg/blocks?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I’ve gone ahead and tagged this for Staff attention on your feedback and question. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

  • Hi there,

Just to confirm, you’re using the Scribd Embed block, and you’re using the embed link, https://www.scribd.com/document/188030155/Best-of-Weather-Report-US-Book, not the shortcode, correct?

I can’t get that link to embed on either a WordPress.com or a self-hosted WordPress site. That, along with what you mention that another document in the page is embedding correctly tells me it’s a problem with that specific document, rather than with the embed.

Can you please give me a link to the page where you’re embedding these documents, or if it’s a draft, can you just tell me the title? Can you also please share the link that is embedding correctly so I can check things on this end?

Meanwhile, your document should embed correctly if you use the Scribd WordPress embed shortcode, rather than the link. On the Scribd document click Embed, then select WordPress in the Format section. Copy that shortcode and paste it into a new block. The block should automatically become a Shortcode block, and the document should be embedded that way.

I am not using the shortcode. I thought that I can’t use shortcodes if I have a free plan, but I will try it now.

Either way, this is a document that works. Here is where I’m embedding them.

Sorry for the quick reposting, but I just tried the shortcode that Scribd gave me for the document page that I want, and when I put the code into WordPress, it shows this in the preview. (for reference, this is the document I wanted again)

Maybe this document does have problems.

Oh, I tried a couple of different URL changes, but I didn’t think to change it to /doc/. May I suggest that Gutenberg automatically corrects a Scribd URL from /document/ to /doc/ in the future? Because I didn’t even notice that the document that worked had the latter instead of the former.

Either way, thanks! I guess I won’t make the same mistake again.

  • I think this might require a change on Scribd’s end first – WordPress uses a protocol called oEmbed to embed those documents on a site. Based on https://oembed.com/ which lists the oEmbed endpoints for various services, Scribd embeds can only work with /doc/ links, so even if the WordPress software was updated to support /document/ it still won’t work.

I’m not able to find any public documentation from Scribd themselves regarding whether or not this has changed, so please contact their support to report this to them. If they support embeds for the other link format as well they’ll need to get the documentation on this updated first, as we can’t open a ticket to have this updated if there isn’t any public documentation confirming that the other link format is also supported.
