Scummy way of registering people to your site

    Hi,

    You should stop registering people to your website that only want the newsletter.

    I went to register for newsletter, then confirmation email has ‘Confirm Now’ button – when clicking that it creates a user on your site.

    This is the SPAMMY kind of way of generating users on your service. You should stop it.

    Thanks.

    Self-declared URL: wordpress.com

    WP.com: Unknown

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

    The content of the email that creates an account on WordPress.com:

    ===============

    Howdy,

    You recently subscribed to w‍o‍r‍d‍p‍r‍e‍s‍s‍.‍o‍r‍g‍/‍n‍e‍w‍s and we need to verify the email you provided. Once you confirm below, you’ll be able to receive and read new posts.

    If you believe this is an error, ignore this message and nothing more will happen.

    Confirm now

    ===========

    ^^^ not a single line that it will create an account. You gotta stop with this bs.

    Unfortunately you are on the wrong website. This is the wordpress.com forum and you are complaining about a wordpress.org newsletter …

    What you are complaining about is common practice for every newsletter otherwise it would not be possible to manage your personal settings …

    First time I see a newsletter signup turn into a full fledged account.

    This is unnecessary and should be counted as some kind of user base frauds.

    This should be re-thought.

    Also, ended up on the .com site because the only place help section on the account points to for help is to the forums.

    I just tested this while logged out of WordPress.com and was gobsmacked to find that a WordPress.com account was created for me with the email address I used to sign up for the WordPress.org newsletter.

    There is absolutely no indication in the email I received to confirm my WordPress.org newsletter subscription that a WordPress.com account would be created for me as a part of the process. It’s not transparent in the least.

    I have since removed my subscription to org/news as well as the two additional newsletters that WordPress.com automatically subscribed me to (Atavist and WordPress.com News) and deleted that account.

    Flagged for staff.

    Hey folks, just letting you know we’re not ignoring this. We are working to sort it out. Thanks for flagging us, @justjennifer.

    Thanks!

    I understand if it’s a limitation of the newsletter platform, but please at least give a warning that an account was also being created.
