search box

i am working with the “visual” theme, and want to put a search box up. the theme description says that it can be two or three columns. it looks like with three columns (which it is right now), there is no room for the search box. how do i get the search box to display? the site is newenglandnauticals.wordpress.com.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there — it’s my understanding that the sidebar area for widgets appears only on single post and single page views in Visual (and not the grid-like front page).
the theme description says that it can be two or three columns.
Where did you read this? It’s not in the Visual description, so want to make sure we’re referring to the same theme.

the “theme details” offers a list of tags, in that list are “two-column, 3 column.” does this theme not offer a two-column layout, or a search box on the main page?

From what I can see, I don’t believe it does. You might be looking at the theme details for self-hosted sites (https://wordpress.org/themes/visual and http://wptheming.com/2013/03/visual-theme/)?
On the theme version for WordPress.com sites, the sidebar (and thus, widgets) displays only on single post and page views.

bummer. i’ll have to tell my “client” that if she wants a site-wide search box, she’ll have to find a different theme. thanks.

A final thought, though I’m not sure what’s possible with this specific theme — you could ask in the CSS Customization forum if you can use custom CSS to achieve what your client wants: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization
It’d ultimately require the Custom Design upgrade ($30) and some CSS experience, but if you get any advice in that forum you can test out/preview this CSS in the Customizer before buying the upgrade. They might be better able to tell you what you can/can’t do.
