search engine referrer problem – SEO related

  • Unknown's avatar

    hello.
I have recently changed the url from curationexperiment.wordpress.com to curationexpriment.com.
Since then, I have noticed visitors from search engine decrease dramatically… from 150 to 5

This is I think mainly caused by URL change and redirection issue. Could you please see what happened and tell me what can be done?

    Thank you and Sincerely,

    Hi there,

I agree, that seems to be a significant impact in traffic the last few days. When the domain of a site switches, the best thing that can be done from SEO standpoint is to setup a site redirect — which is what’s done when anyone visits an old curationexperiment.wordpress.com link.

That being said, you likely had a few links that had a higher page rank than normal and once the domain changed, the redirect hurt that score. The only thing to be done is to get the ranking for your new domain higher. That normally happens over time and there’s no steps I could offer that’s going to fix the issue in a matter of days.

The first step I’d recommend is verifying your site in Google Webmaster Tools:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/

This will at least help Google learn faster that not only does curationexperiment.wordpress.com redirect to curationexperiment.com — but also that curationexperiment.com is to be trusted.

When setting that verification up, we do recommend that you verify both “curationexperiment.com” and “www.curationexperiment.com”, both should be able to be verified using the same meta tag.
