search engine set up

  • Unknown's avatar

    I was told by a reputable company that my blog site is not set to show up in the search engines. Is this something I can do? If not who can?

    URL: inandaroundthegarden.net

    Thank you!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    That’s nonsense. It’s specifically the kind of nonsense those who are looking to be paid to do SEO (search engine optimizing) twaddle so you will hire them. Alternatively there are those with self hosted WordPress.org install spiel such nonsense as well.

    1. You blog visibility is public.
    2. You blog feeds are valid and operating.
    3. Your blog is indexed by Google (524 results).
    4. Your blog is indexed by Bing (24 results).

    The person who stated this to you is wrong.

    That being said, the question becomes this one: can I improve my blog’s search engine visibility and placement in the SERPs (search engine page results)? The answer to that is “yes”. You can either learn white hat (ethical) SEO practices and apply they to your blog. Or you can hire someone to do it for you.

    The first thing I would do is get rid of the static front page as they are traffic killers. No returning visitors want to click through the same page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit. Viistors come to read your most recent content and that’s what ought to be on your front page ie. your running page for posts ought to be your front page.

    As you have tweaked upon my pet peeve I link to an article that provides more food for thought. These days many bloggers are restructuring their blogs to become page based, rather than using a conventional post based blog structure. They do so for aesthetic reasons ie. they think anything that resembles a website is cooler than a blog.

    Well, there’s no way I would do that. Static front pages are traffic killers. Sticky posts are also traffic killers. They are meant to be one in number, short in content like a brief notice is, and temporarily posted. Page based sites have a difficult time:
    1. securing traffic;
    2. securing comments;
    3. securing backlinks;
    4. achieving authority in their niche;
    5. achieving Google PageRank.

    If you are interested in increasing your blogs’s page rank and authority in the niche it’s in then read this post. Better Blogging at WordPress.com: Pages and Posts

    I will consider removing the static page and I’ll read your suggested material.

    Glad I asked before jumping into a money pit.–Thank you!

    Somewhat on the same subject, I once set it so that the entire text was sent to subscribers’ inbox. Convenient for them, but the hits went down and I couldn’t monitor most popular post, etc. Is there any guidelines on the pros and cons of setting it up so the entire post content goes to subscribers’ inbox?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes. I do not send whole posts to subscribers. I cannot because when I do blog carpers steal my content and I have to waste my time drafting and sending DMCA take down notices to get my posts removed from there splogs.

    Go here > Settings > Reading
    Scrool down to this and choose “summary”:
    For each article in a feed, show
    __Full text
    __Summary

    So, what all do I need to read to convert three of the categories on the sidebar to the front page so it’s no longer static, without losing any archives.

    I’m concerned I’m going to create a mess and run into trouble.

    Thank you!

    Which page (post the URL please) are your posts (not pages) displaying on now?

    YOu still have a static front page showing. Go to Settings->Reading and set the site to open on the Blog page, not a static page.

  • Unknown's avatar

    That’s because I’m trying to figure out how to move, insert, or convert the pages where my posts are currently displayed to the front page, without making a mess of my blog or losing content.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You cannot lose any pages unless you delete them and you aren’t going to do that. You go here > Settings Reading and you change what you have on that page currently to “your latest posts”.
    Front page displays
    __Your latest posts

    Remove these

    Well, that was simple. Thanks!

    Do I hide or delete the ‘Home’ page? Isn’t the front page usually the ‘home page’?

    And do I need the categories that are now showing on the front page?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Why are my photos and the blue background turned dark?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m seeing a normal display on your blog. All images and the background look great on Firefox 7.0.1. I’m thinking you must have an issue that you need to do some troubleshooting to address.

    How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.

    I do have dial-up and I use Firefox, but my blog looked great before making the front page change. I’ll look into your suggestions. You’ve been very helpful. Thank you!
