Search Engine Terms Stats are Odd

  • Unknown's avatar

Lately I wonder about the search engine term stats, I often just can see 10% or maximum 20% (felt) of the search engine terms in the stats.

I am aware of the situation that many people use noscript addons or adblocker or anythink which could prevent the terms to be transmitted.

But I simply wonder about the numbers. 80% or 90% of blocked scripts is a lot. To put it crudely… I can tell you that most of the people I know don´t even know that they could use another browser apart from the internet explorer. Therfor they don´t even know that they could install a browser with customizing functionality. But the people who know, are in my opinion mostly not the average users, but rather geeks or at least people who rely a little more on the internet than the average user.

So, to get numbers like 200 search engine visits and only 20 terms are transmitted to the stats dashboard, that seems to me very unrealistic.

I start to wonder if there is anything wrong with the stats?

I can usually see 30-50%, its a reducing figure. Unfortunately a lot more people are using the secure (https) search engines and acording to this update google could be moving to 100% encrypted searches.

It’s a shame but I think that seeing search terms may become a thing of the past

https was my suspicion too. This would be really sad at least for us webmasters and bloggers. I always found it to be interesting, what kind of search terms people use, to visit my blog. The data was even inspiring sometimes. :/

Yes, and sometimes funny. I’ll never forget my surprise at seeing that someone had found my blog by searching for “I want to dream about Karen Armstrong”.

I suspect the searcher was not thinking about the same Karen Armstrong that I was writing about!

I know what you mean :D It´s true. It was also sometimes amusing. I found a lot of funny search queries in the past as well. :)

See this post for more info on unknown search terms – Google is now encrypting all search terms and not passing them on
