Search engine traffic question

  • Unknown's avatar

I am seeing some search engine traffic, but it is puzzling me a little.

One of the topics I post about is rabbits. I am seeing search engine traffic come in that, by the terms they are searching on, must be cooming to one particular post as it is the only place I have talked about the things they are searching for.

However, although the search engines are sending them my way, they seem to be coming to the home page every time – not to the rabbit post.

Would they be landing on the home page in the right place to see the appropriate post, or will “home page” always land at the top of the front page.

For now I have put a link to the rabbit post at the top of other posts as I write them so hopefully if people land on the front page, they will still find the right post. But can anyone explain why they aren’t being sent to that post in the first place please?

    TIA

hmm – is there any particular reason why I can’t get an answer to this question? Or is it just that no-one knows the answer?

@eumaeus – bumping your thread several times does not get the answer any quicker, and makes your thread look like it is being answered by someone. Bumping also distorts the fabric of space and time and irritates many of the unpaid volunteers who would otherwise help you. Almost all of the support here is by your fellow bloggers.

I have a couple of thoughts but I make it a point not to respond to bumped threads so I shall leave this thread for a more knowledgeable person as I would not want to give you less than a full and complete answer.

Sorry auxclass – apart from the first one, I wasn’t intentionally bumping as such – just puzzled why no-one had replied.

My second post WAS a bump, my third was a response to nuerfrosy’s post

And my third was a genuine question as I was puzzled.

Sorry to have been such a nuisance – it cetainly wasn’t intended!

    @eumaeus
I deleted the spammer, as well as your response to him…

Sorry I don’t have an answer other than to say that Google does things its own way.

Sometimes an excerpt on a category or home page will make that page outrank the actual post. Search engines are weird.

AH – he was a spammer – that would be why I couldn’t make any sense of what he was saying LOL I was tryign to read it as though it had been translated badly from another language and just couldn’t make head or tail of it :D

OK – thank you for looking, I was just worried in case I had done something to make my post “hide” – I can keep putting the link in the top of posts to make sure people find it :)

    Thank you again

mkwrp – thank you that sounds feasible, it is a new blog and I can’t have a lot of rank anyway (like 0.0000000001 I should think ;) ) but I guess, if the post hasn’t been viewed directly, it won’t be gaining anything with google, so the home page will keep getting there first?

On some of my self-hosted blogs I’ve found that Google will occasionally pick up the homepage minutes to hours before it picks up the post. The actual page always won the rank in the end.

ah – thank you – I have hope then :)
