search engines

Not quite sure how to ask the question, but is there a place to put terms/words that helps search engines find you? Is that “website verification” part of that? If so can you direct me to information to help understand that and how it works.
Thanks,

Howdy Holly!
There isn’t necessarily a place to put keywords (referred to as meta tags) in your site to help search engines categorize your site effectively. In general, WordPress.com handles SEO optimization for you. Beyond the normal optimizations like your sitemap, which you can view here:

We also have a Global Tagging (Topics) system that search engines love and we ping out to all the major engines every time you update your blog. This helps to keep search engines active with your latest content.
The Website Verification you mention won’t necessarily improve your search results. However, it can help you to identify issues with your site so I would recommend doing it whenever you have time:

In addition, you might want to consider linking your Google + profile following the instructions here:

That helps search engines to know who authored the content, and it can help your rankings in search results.
All of this information is wrapped up in this awesome blog post we have regarding SEO at WordPress.com:
Can you give that a read and let me know if you have any additional questions?

Thanks! All those links very helpful and I think I can figure it out from here. Mine is a website for a new business, but do plan to add a blog page and I can see now how that will also help in being at the top of searches. It has been a learning curve, but so great how quickly people come to the rescue!
