“Search Engines Discouraged”

I haven’t launched my site yet, but am crossing my “Ts” before I do. WordPress is automatically changing the setting to “search engines discouraged” and when I uncheck the box, it automatically brings it back. I don’t want to discourage search engines. Is this going to change once it’s launched or am I missing something?

If you are referring to the option on your “Reading Settings” page, listed under “Search engine visibility”, making changes to that checkbox will not be taken into consideration yet since your site is not launched.
Once you launch your site, you will be able to disable the option and it will properly save. Here is our guide explaining how to launch your site through the default interface:
