search engines question

    Hi all,
    I have heard many times that all page sites are the worst for search engines. I have two questions about this,
    1. Is the only reason for having all pages as a bad thing for search engines because WordPress doesn’t automatically ping the search engines?
    2. If static pages are bad for search engines, then how do sites with all pages achieve page rank? A few things to note,
    1. I don’t intend to change my site, I was just curious.
    2. We’re not talking just wordpress sites necisarily, but if it is all the same then I guess it doesn’t matter.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Bob,
    Let’s start with being clear about what a blog is so my answers are in context.

    Blogs are websites that have a post based architectural structure. Blog posts are typically displayed in reverse-chronological order with the latest posts at the top. Blogs feature dynamic content and position it front and center. The entries have date and time stamps, and blog entries are customarily displayed on the front page in reverse chronological order.

    Most websites do not have dynamic content on their front pages. Many websites have static front pages that compel return vistors to visit the same landing page every time they visit. The information most websites provide is static, rarely updated, and the sites are often poorly urganized, and poorly maintained.

    Now for your questions:

    1. No.
    Please read here . http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/02/15/new-content-wordpress-com-pings-for-you/

    2. They struggle to do so and IMHO the struggle is completely unnecessary. Let’s face it. The only reason people are changing the conventional posts based structure of their blog is to please their own aesthetic preference ie. to create mock website.

    I have expelained all the effects of making theat choice in this post. > Better Blogging at WordPress.com: Pages and Posts http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/

    How many A list bloggers in Technorati’s top 100 blogs do you know who have changed their blogs from being post based syructures to page structures based? ZERO

    If you want to be a blogger with a blog that can achieve a decent PageRank and traffic flow and inflow of backlinks, then retain a conventional post based structure, produce fresh content frequently and display it on the front page of the blog.

    @timethief
    So what you are saying is sites like this one, this one, or even this one are going to have a lower page rank than your site because your site has posts displayed on the front page. The first site I linked to doesn’t even have a blog built in, the second one the blog is hard to get to and not a main part of the site, and the third one, although the blog is easy to get to, is not on the home page. Or am I giving you links to the wrong types of websites?

    @Bob
    I am a plain pseaking person who ncan be misunderstood as being curt and blunt. I say the following in a spirit of goodwill. The context here is wordpress.com blog structure choices ie. ether post based or page based. The information I provided and published in my post is accurate. And I don’t wish to get into lengthy discussions and comparisons of this to that on this forum.

    @Bob: The page rank of a site depends on many factors (number of posts/pages, number and quality of other webpages linking to and linked from, internal linking, speed of access, and various other things search engines like or don’t like).

    But yes, two of the three sites you’ve linked to have a lower page rank than timethief’s blog. Timethief’s: 5; your examples: 4, 5, 2.

    And I don’t think you should care much:
    “When a user enters a query, our machines search the index for matching pages and return the results we believe are the most relevant to the user. Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors, one of which is the PageRank for a given page.”
    (from http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=70897 , emphasis mine).

    Thank you! I really don’t care all that much about my own page rank that much, I was mostly curious.
