Search feature?

  • Unknown's avatar

Can I have a search feature which allows my customers to search fro products by type, size, color, etc. from my inventory? If so, are there themes which already include this or would I need to add it to the theme I choose?

I am redesigning our old Dreamweaver-based website into something that is simpler to build and update. I am not certain I will go with WordPress yet, but would like to. I would like a search function with around 5 parameters, each with dropdown menus.

    Thanks!

Our current site is not indicative of what I am aiming for with the new design. If you can, just assume someone is on our site to buy pants. In order to not look at every pair of pants, they can filter the results to only see the size, color, and style. So I guess I am looking for a search filter feature so that my customers can find exactly what they want. Make sense?

    Hi there,

You have the option of either choosing wordpress.com or wordpress.org in order to run your site, however, they are quite different. You might be able to create a custom search filter if you self-host at wordpress.org, but I am not sure. Therefore, I have added a modlook tag to this thread so that staff can further assist you.

For more info on the difference between the two software versions, please look here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/.

    Thank you.

Thank you! I already have a domain name, so I just am looking for a simpler way to create and update my site. It has to be easy for someone to take over, if need be, once I have it up and running. I am not an expert coder by any means, so with my rudimentary Dreamweaver skills I am not able to keep up with the latest trends in SEO and mobile adaptability. It will be more like a portfolio site with many photos, plus some copy.

I will go with wordpress.org. Should I look for themes that include the search filter or will I have to add that? If I have to add, is it a called a widget or a plugin?

  • Hi there,

So you want an online store?

You can definitely do that with WordPress, though you might need a custom search plugin for the type of search you want to use.

If you want managing the site to be as simple as possible, you might want to look at our WordPress.com Business Plan. On that plan you’re able to use most plugins, we take care of all the technical stuff like server and software maintenance for you, and the plan includes 24/7 live chat support, including support for the WooCommerce online shopping plugin.

Or you can go with the open source software found on WordPress.org instead. Depending on the hosting provider you choose it might be cheaper, but you’ll likely need to do your own software updates, and support is generally extra and only covers hosting and the core WordPress software, not specific plugins.

Let us know if you have any more questions about this.
