Search feature broken (details and screenshot inside)
-
Hello,
I thought it would be some form of help, to come and report you a bug.
It seems that, under certain circumstances, the Search feature doesn’t work.I saved it to a screenshot, take a look :
http://i.imgur.com/Q0eL0kA.jpgIn that example, the term “Bushiteki”, despite being present on several occasions on the site kfctranslations.wordpress.com/ , is NOT found by the wordpress.com search engine.
To give you a comparison, asking Google [ bushiteki site:kfctranslations.wordpress.com/ ] returns nine results.
Well, that’s about it. I hope it may be fixed, some day, until then, be well !
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WTH, I thought I was sending a message to a wordpress support person, not posting on the forum ?
How could I screw up THAT badly ?
And there’s no “Edit” link at all ?!?
Allright, then I deeply apologize, but please, beware, although the screenshot is fully OK for all audiences, the website itself, kfctranslations, contains some parts that are for mature audiences.
And as such, I would NOT have wanted to post this link in an open forum. Sorry for this, I screwed up :( -
The WordPress.com search engine indexes post, pages, and comments content (body text). Unless entered as text in those contents, blog name, post titles, and post/comment author names are not indexed. http://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpresscom-search/
This is a peer support forum where Volunteers and Staff work cooperatively to deliver WordPress.com support. There is no phone support here and we Volunteers do not provide support by email.
Volunteers answer most questions posted into forum threads and Staff monitor. When Volunteers cannot provide the required support we flag threads for Staff attention.
Only Staff and our Moderator can edit, delete or close threads here.

Hey Oliver!
As mentioned on our support page:
The WordPress.com search engine indexes post, pages, and comments content (body text). Unless entered as text in those contents, blog name, post titles, and post/comment author names are not indexed.
This means our search engine indexes only the body text of blog posts. Thus, the reason why a search for “site:kfctranslations.wordpress.com bushiteki ” doesn’t yield any result is because the term “bushiteki” only appears in the post title.
On the other hand, if you do a search for “site:kfctranslations.wordpress.com doujinshi”, it gives us one result because it appears in the body text. I hope that makes sense.
Let me know if you have other questions or concerns. Thanks!

Allright, I got your explanations, and clarification, thank you, Timethief and Druesome, I am grateful :)
Could I still add one last remark, meant as constructive criticism, so that, hopefully, other people don’t stumble on the same problem than me ?
To your three-items bulletlist attempting to explain why there have been no results found (spelling, keywords, different keywords, more general keywords), I feel that two additional entries really ought to be added :
– that wordpress.com does not index titles
– that blogs labelled as adult are not indexedGood day everyone :)

Good suggestions.
That support doc needs to be cross referenced to
http://en.support.wordpress.com/mature-content/

Hi there! Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve updated the WordPress.com Search support document to be a bit clearer on what’s indexed in the search and provided a link to the Mature Blogs support doc under “Missing Posts”.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpresscom-search/
As for the bullet list, since our search engine is more of a user tool than a tool for blog owners to track their blog posts, I think it would be a good idea to let it stay as it is.
Let me know if you had more suggestions for improvements in this area. Thank you!

Hello,
Thanks for your work, but if you don’t mind, I will try, one last time, to suggest you update the bullet list about why there aren’t any search results.
I’ll quote you, because I wonder if there hasn’t been a misunderstanding : « our search engine is more of a user tool than a tool for blog owners to track their blog posts »
— Well, I am not the owner of that blog. I simply found a small version of this crazy Bruce Lee parody image on a random funny pictures website, and, asking around, I was told it was drawn by an artist called Bushiteki, and the persons who brought this shining piece of crazy Japanese imagination were kfctranslations.wordpress.com
Following this, I asked wordpress.com, after opening their blog, to tell me where the Bushiteki goodness was on kfctranslations : no result.
I asked google with a [ keyword site:url.net ] syntax, and, this time, that gave me the post I needed. So, you see, I am far from being in a webmastering approach. I was strictly acting as a visitor asking wordpress.com to fetch me results.
Maybe could I not be the same person with that profile ?I’m under the impression wordpress.com is doing a dis-service to its visitors, with the combination of not indexing titles and mature posts AND not telling it’s not indexing it.
I don’t blame per se that mature contents or post titles aren’t indexed, there must be valid reasons for the titles, and hushing the mature posts when you don’t know how old the visitor is, that kinda makes sense. What I regret is that it’s not clearly (as in : the bullet list) told : it feels as if wordpress.com were lying to us, pretending there is nothing. If we were clearly told, we would just shrug and try with another search engine, eventually knowing for sure if there really isn’t anything to find.
Well, that’s for how I feel about it. No worries if you disagree, I was just trying my chance one last time with what I believe is good constructive criticism :)

Thanks for the suggestion! I understand where you’re coming from and it’s certainly worth considering. I’ll ask someone from our developer team to look into it and we’ll see what we can do. Cheers!
