search function works only when I am logged in

    I have everything password protected so access to the site may be limited.
    I will have about 50-60 posts on my site, so I want readers to be able to use the search function to find posts by name (they are people’s names). I can use the search while I am logged in to the blog, but when I log out and come in as a user would, the search returns no results – for anything!
    I am using twenty fourteen theme, and have placed a search widget as well as the included one. Both work while I’m logged in, neither works when I sign out. What am I doing wrong?
