Search in Google returns only the Title of site and Footer links in description

    Hi,

I have recently started blogging in a site with wordpress.com software. I had posted some posts and now when I search my blog on google, it displays my site as either 6-8 th position on the first page. But the only issue I have is with the description it gives to my post.

I am talking about my blog at http://www.explainstuff.com

type explain stuff in google and it is shown as 8th result. But if you see the explanation or description, you only get:

    Explain Stuff
Explain Stuff · New facinating fact of the day – ExplainStuff.com …. Copyright © 2009 Explain Stuff All rights reserved. Amazing Grace theme by Vladimir

I see that for some reason, it only detects the site title, logo and the footer links.

Can someone explain me why the bots won’t show my description I put in the SEO plugin or custom fields?
I am seeing all other pages and tags I have and the description for them. This issue is only with the first page… the HOME page. Has anybody else encountered this kind of issue before? Please let me know what you did. If you have not encountered this issue before, please do let me know what you think I should do. I am completely lost. But am sure the explanation/description the spiders got from my site or atleast are displaying is not too appealing to attract any user.

    Thanks,
    http://www.explainstuff.com

http://www.explainstuff.com isn’t a wordpress.COM hosted blog, it is self-hosted on a third-party hosting service. You need to direct questions regarding self-hosted blogs to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ . Things here work differently so we won’t be able to help you.

oh ! ok I’ll post it in the support! Sorry about that. Also can someone… please tell me how to edit posts I post here. Are they not editable?

  • Unknown's avatar

There is no edit function here in this forum. Staff took that privilege away due to abuse so we have to live with typos and incorrect URLs and such. At the .ORG forums there is still an edit link that if I remember is live for 5 minutes after you post. When 5 minutes goes by, then you are not allowed to edit.

Thanks a lot for that info!

I had already posted it in the other forum.

    Thank you again!

I have the same question than yourado, but my blog IS wordpress.com when searching @ google it shows what looks like a random portion of one of my posts. Is there a way to “modify” what google shows as the site description?

    Thanks a lot!

Depends what search item you entered. Can you be more specific?

    Raincoaster,
I’m searching “freemarketswork”–> when searching this way it shows a portion of my sidebar text
and “free markets work” –>when searching this way it shows a random portion of one of the posts.

Is there a way to show the actual site description (i.e. the blog’s tagline) on search results?

    Thanks for your help!

Yes: blog more. Right now you haven’t got enough content, but as you continue to blog, it’ll settle out.

Thank you very much for your fast response! I will definitely add more content to the site.
