Search Posts by Title?

Hello, I am fairly new (one week) to this (and I have brain ache to prove it) but I can’t find anything on searching my blog by title in fora or FAQ’s.

I keep a page with the titles of my posts so anyone can see and search by title so they don’t have to scroll back through a whole month in Archives to get to that month’s first post, so I thought. When I use a title in the Search box I just go back to Title page, sometimes I get to what I’m looking for and sometimes I get it by navigating via ‘Next Page’ at bottom of Title page. But it’s not consistent and I’d like to search only posts, not pages.

I would like to be able to view titles and search the one I want directly. Is this possible?

    Help is always appreciated. Mark

Have you added the search widget to your sidebar or are you still using the layout that came with your blog? Sometimes I’ve noticed that the search box that comes with the default layout doesn’t work as well as the widget you add yourself. You could try adding it in Dashboard > Presentation > Widgets and see if that improves your results.

Otherwise you could create an archive page; you could link each title to the post, so that way anyone who visits the page will be able to click and see the posts. You could also try a different theme. Some of the searches seem a little more accurate with the different themes; I use MistyLook and I’ve never had a problem finding a post by it’s title. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that CJ, much appreciated.

There is only the one search box unless it’s called something else. I will experiment using the available calendar, apparently it can search too. It does so by date so I would have to include the date with the post entered in the titles page. It seems unnecessarily complicated in the age of computers.

I have created a Titles page (Archive by another name?) but how would I cause each Title entry to link to its post? It’s a good idea but I haven’t come across anything that suggested I could do something like that.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

In my experience the search widget learned as it went along. Now I can type in two or three words from a title and it will generally find it, although the results are in reverse chronological order rather than relevance.

  • You’ll need to manually add links to the post titles if you are putting this info into a page. There isn’t a way to do it automatically.

Thank you rain… and mtd…. The search is too hit and miss for me, maybe it can learn from the calendar, just kidding.

I can’t remember now but I think the theme used the calendar at first and I changed it not knowing it also searches. It’s not exactly what I want but it’s better than the search. I can scroll from month to month in it and any day with a post is highlighted and when I hover on a highlighted number I see the title of the post. Click and I’m there.

I’ll still keep the Titles/dates page so anybody can select what post to see and go directly to it without having to search one number at a time.

?Will this work to link within my blog? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/how-do-i-make-a-link-to-another-site/

?This may be for another thread? I always open links in another tab, always. I recommend it to people. Some links automatically open in a new tab, is it possible to include this in links in my blog? Should I put this question somewhere else for others to see?

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time. Mark

I see now about the linking. Making them is easy, one at a time. And I can set it to open in another window but not another tab, it seems. Is there a list of URL’s for my posts and pages somewhere or do I have to open every one to get the URL?

You should be able to do it from Manage in your Dashboard and just “Copy Link Location” if you’re using FF.

Got it. As soon as I have time I’ll play with that and see what happens. Full of tracks and trails that all lead somewhere isn’t it.

    Thanks again. Mark
