Search Widget in Footer

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am using the Rebalance theme on my WordPress.com site and it has four widgets in the footer. They have been there for about ten years but some time ago I found that one of them, the Search widget, no longer functions. It just goes to a blank page.

The other three widgets appear to be still functioning normally.

    Can anyone recommend a solution?

    Regards,

    Roger

Hi there, back in the olden days we’d suggest removing, saving, and then re-adding the widget and saving again. Have you already tried that? It could be that this specific search widget is no longer supported. Keep in mind that all widgets are now blocks. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/search-block/

I just switched my test site to Rebalance and added the search widget block to the footer and it works without issue. (temporary screenshot)

Let me know how that goes.

Thanks, Jennifer. Your suggestion was something I should have already tried.

I deleted all footer widgets and reinstalled them to no avail. I tried it in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Also tried on a laptop. The same problem occurred: a blank page.

However, I did something else which I hadn’t tried before: refreshing the tab of the blank page. Lo and behold! The results page appeared.

From the results page, the search function worked in real time with each character typed but if I go back to the search widget the original problem still persists,

So the search engine does work but it needs an intermediate manual page refresh to display the results, which is not very satisfactory to my subscribers if they try it.

So I’ve narrowed it down but not resolved it yet.

Ah, thanks, Roger, for that additional info.

It looks like you’re using “jetpack search” and not the regular search like I tested on my test site. Jetpack search results appear in a pop-up window and the regular search on a regular page. https://wordpress.com/support/jetpack-search/

Again, you can try enabling and disabling jetpack search, but this might be something that staff will need to look into. If disabling/re-enabling the feature doesn’t fix this issue for you, feel free to add the MODLOOK tag for staff. (I will only be able to look in on the forums on Friday.)

OK-I had a few minutes this afternoon and since I’m getting the exact same behavior on my Private test site after adding (with some difficulty) the free Jetpack search feature, I’ve gone ahead and flagged this thread for Staff attention.

I’m using the search block which is the only one which comes up in my list of available blocks. I’m not sure if any other option is available to me on a free plan.

Thanks for escalating this, Jennifer. 🙂

  • Hi there!

Thank you for flagging this for us!

I can confirm there is a bug related to Rebalance and the Instant Search feature. When this is enabled, the search page will not render properly, however, we flagged this to the appropriate team to be looked into.

As an alternative, until this is fixed, please consider turning off the Instant Search feature from Jetpack -> Search.

    Hi Robertghetau,

I only just noticed your response. (For some reason I don’t get e-mail notifications to the forum).

Thank you for reaching out, I hope this issue can be resolved.

    Regards,

    Roger
