Search widget: What It Searches
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/search-widget/#what-it-searchesThe Search widget will return results from the titles and the bodies of your posts and pages, and from media titles, alt text, file names, and captions. It will not return results from widgets, comments, categories, or tags.
Also, note that the search results will display posts with the matching term in the post title in reverse-chronological order. Then, it will display posts with the matching term in the post body in reverse-chronological order. So for example, if you have just published a post about Michigan titled “This Weekend,” and you also have an older post titled “Michigan,” searching for ‘michigan’ will display that older post at the top of the list.
You yourself (not your visitors) can do a subject search or date search in your Media Library http://ktesmi.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php but that’s the extent of the capability. What’s best is to use descriptive image file names and also use descriptive post category assignment https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

I see you’ve added tags, which is a good idea. I’d also recommend you consider breaking your posts down into more specific collections of photos, and tag them accordingly. You could also write sort descriptions of the images, and related information, to help enhance findability. :)

Thanks for the responses.
“The Search widget will return results from the titles and the bodies of your posts and pages, and from media titles, alt text, file names, and captions. It will not return results from widgets, comments, categories, or tags.”
What I want is for it to find posts based on searching for media titles, alt texts, file names and captions.
What can I do to get the search widget to pick up words in these captions?
