Search widget not finding key words in copy on pages
-
Dear Boffins
My site is http://www.sevencircumstances.com. It is text- and content-heavy because it consists of reviews and literary analyses. But the WordPress search widget is not working. Most of the time it brings up no results at all, except for words in the titles of pages. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong or how to fix it. Users have to be able to search for book and author names from the contents on the site, otherwise the whole thing is pretty useless. I’m a novice blogger and I’ve learned a few things about WordPress, but this has me stumped. Is Google custom search an option? I have the code but how do I use it?

The WordPress.com search engine indexes post, pages, and comments content (body text). Unless entered as text in those contents, blog name, post titles, and post/comment author names are not indexed. http://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpresscom-search/

Users have to be able to search for book and author names from the contents on the site, otherwise the whole thing is pretty useless.
Create a category for each author name and assign it to the appropriate posts and install the Categories widget.

Alternatively create a custom menu and add the categories pages for authors into it http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages -
For Topics (Tags page) searches see http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/ This is the syntax http://en/wordpress.com/tags/canada
See here http://wordpress.com/#!/read/topics/For Google searches use this format and replace “keyword” with whatever word you wish:
keyword site:wordpress.com/Example search string
Queen Victoria site:wordpress.com

I think you’ve found the problem. In order for me to list all the book reviews, the bulk of them are in a captioned thumbnail image carousel. So I guess they can’t be picked up as they’re not text?

Oy veh. Looks like the tags/categories option will have to be next, for all 100+ authors! I’ll get on with it then. Thanks for your help, Boffins. Much appreciated.

If you review a book, use the title in the title of your post, and also in the first or second sentence of the post, along with the author’s name. This will help you: http://raincoastermedia.com/2011/06/08/keywording-like-a-boss/
