search widget suddenly appeared

I’m very much a newbie. Now using the theme called Suits. A search icon has suddenly appeared on the right side of my main menu. How the heck do I move it or get rid of it? It’s getting in the way of my navigation menu, and it doesn’t work (at least not in Internet Explorer). It is NOT one of the widgets I’ve activated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

A search icon has suddenly appeared on the right side of my main menu.

The search bar is built into the theme and has been there since the theme was introduced on January 8th. It’s not something you can remove, unless you have the Custom Design upgrade and even then I’m not certain it can be removed.

Looking again at your site, perhaps the search function has become more noticeable because of the color changes in the header and navbar?

Thinking out loud, you could shorten the names of some links in the Custom Menu navbar so that they wouldn’t get knocked down to two lines.

As far as IE, you don’t mention which version you are using. It’s working fine for me in IE11, meaning when I click on the search icon, the search box opens.

I think you had it right with your first email. I changed themes because someone in my class (I’m on wordpress for an online class) thought it wasn’t working very well. I found this one and thought it great, except I couldn’t figure out why I had the search widget because I was pretty sure I hadn’t added it! That’s too bad it comes with the theme, because I really liked the names of my menus across the top.
I’m using IE11 on windows 8. It still doesn’t work for me.
(This has been frustrating. I’m taking a “writing for the web” class and spending more time on the technology than on writing!) Well, thank you for the help. I’ll stop trying to figure out what I did “wrong”!

No worries, but I think I will still tag this for Staff because of the IE11/Win8 problem with the search box you describe.

Can you give a little more detail? Can you click on the icon? Does it open?

  • Hi Wendy,

Do you mean Windows 8.1? I tested this in IE 11/Windows 8.1 and it works for me. Can you please describe a bit more what happens when you try to use it?

A screenshot might be helpful: Here are instructions for how to make a screenshot: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload it to your blog’s Media Library and I can look at it there.

Hello and thank you for… caring. :) According to the properties tag on my computer, I have plain old Windows 8. When I move the pointer over the icon, I still see the icon but with a black square around it, and on the right side is a blinking white cursor. When I type, nothing appears to happen, but then when I move the pointer away I see tiny (very tiny) little letters that I typed. When I hit enter, it does appear to do a find, but there’s definitely something wrong. I think I managed to upload “Search1” and “search2” to my media library. (You have no idea of the challenge you presented by asking me to do screen captures and put it in the library. I am an absolute whiz on my mac at work, but Windows 8 has nearly defeated me.)

  • Hi Wendy,

Thanks for the screenshots! IE 11 can’t actually be used with Windows 8, but I tried this out with 8.1 and IE 11, as well as Windows 8 and IE 10. And it worked for me with both versions.

So, I’m not sure why yours is showing as skewed like that. You might try (1) disabling any browser add-ons you’re using with IE, (2) checking to make sure you are not in compatibility mode, (3) and/or make sure you’re not zoomed in or out on your browser.
