  I will have 40 resume docs in my website. I want people to be able to search and find particular resumes by career type (i.e., teachers). Can this be done in a free WordPress site?

  Yes. You may create and activate a custom menu which includes links to either pages containing the docs or the docs themselves. See the Custom Menus support page.
